Scott Rolen
I cant seem to find any information on him. Has he officially retired? Or did the Reds just not re-sign him and he's a free agent trying to hook up with another team as a backup and pinch-hitter?

Rolen is in limbo - not signed and not retired.

Re: Scott Rolen
Whats the word on his health? Would he be able to play at a decent level in 2013? I assume since he has not officially retired that he feels like he has a little something to offer someone at this point. Spring Training is right around the corner.

RE: Scott Rolen
Rumors are that Rolen wants to play. The Dodgers looked at him, but decided against signing him. The Reds may still bring him back, but he would be a reserve to Todd Frazier.

Re: Scott Rolen
Any chance the Redbirds would be interested in him as a backup to David Freese? And as a RH pinch-hitter?

Rat Only if Wigginton gets run over by a bus.

Re: Scott Rolen
Trying to remember the sequence of events... was Rolen traded before or after Mo replaced Walt?

RE: Scott Rolen
The trade happened about 90 days after Mo took over, but the damage was done prior.

Re: Scott Rolen
Scott has had a very good career. It could have been great had he been healthy. I hope he decides to retire and not hang on...I hate to see great careers end with players trying to hang on longer than they should.

RE: Scott Rolen
I thought Wigginton was just a 1st baseman? If DD is truly going to be an everyday 2nd basemen then we can't be switching him to 3rd base every time Freese needs a day off. I'm all for bringing Rolen back to regain some of the leadership we may lose if Carp isn't around the team this year.

RE: Scott Rolen
Wigginton can play third, Matt Carpenter can play third, and Descalso can play third. We won't be bringing Rolen back.

Yes, I remember the damage - especially since everytime I google myself, that old article I wrote about the "Dirty Dozen" Cardinal feuds pops up and I'm reminded that at the time, we were pooh-poohing the extent of the TLR/Rolen feud. Hindsight...

RE: Scott Rolen
Unfortunately I would probably put the over/under of Freese starts this year at about 90. The guy is simply injury plagued. I think the odds of David being the Cards starting 3rd baseman three....make that two years from now are pretty slim. Boy but what a 2011 post season he treated we Cardinal fans to!! I'll always love him for it.

Re: Scott Rolen
I see where Freese started 132 games at 3B in 2012... fourth highest number of starts on the team behind Holliday (154), Beltran (135) and Molina (133).
I hadn't realized, until looking it up right now, that only seven Cards started more than 100 games in 2012... the others being Furcal (116), Craig (113) and Jay (108 ). Descalso just missed, starting 94 games; Schumaker started 68 and M. Carpenter 67.

I'll always love him for it. I'm perfectly comfortable with Matt Carpenter playing the other 70 or even the entire 160 if need be. Carpenter is good. If Freese, Carpenter, or Wigginton went down with a season ending injury in the next 2 weeks and Rolen is still available, then I guess we could go get him. I prefer we didn't sign Wigginton at all, but I would bet he does better than Rolen this year and he can "play" other positions than just 3B.

pugsleyaddams wrote: Thanks, CardinalNationHouston! I too am a little worried about Freese. He seems to be one of those people that things happen to. This last off season accident is worrisome to me b/c he was either in the wrong or he was once again in the wrong place at the wrong time. Either way it is not good. I sure hope he stays healthy though b/c he is a big part of this team. Pads is right too about Carpenter being a nice fall back and the Wiggy signing being a bit of a head scratcher. I strongly suspect we will see a lot more of him than many of us would like. Ty has always been a much better player when spot starting than he is off the bench though so if pressed into starting duty he is probably passable. Also he is a true mistake hitter so i have my doubts about him against the elite late inning guys if he pinch hits.

Re: Scott Rolen
I would chalk Wiggington's poor PH record in 2012 up to small sample size... he went 5-for-33 (.152) as a PH in 2012, but prior to 2012 he was 19-for-70 (.271) in that role. He'll be fine, and at least he represents a power threat off the bench. Shane Robinson, bless his heart, led the team with 11 pinch-hits last season, but obviously doesn't pose any sort of power threat.
It could be worse... there was one season, I want to say 1997, when the Cards had only one pinch-hit HR all year, and that one was hit by Ron Gant, who didn't start that day.
