Chris Carpenter injury and comeback

The Cards have announced a press conference for 1:30 p.m. CT today when GM John Mozeliak "will be making an announcement on baseball related information."

What is your guess? Waino, Freese, other?

What is the subject of Mo's Tuesday press conference?

  1. Poll closed on 02/12/2013
  2. Wainwright extension: 6 votes
  3. Freese arbitration: 6 votes
  4. Something else: 8 votes

My guess is it will be Ballpark Village related. Maybe the announcement of a new tenant?

Miklasz saying it has to do with Chris Carpenter. The press conference will be live on MLB.com, Channel 2 as well as a number of radio stations.

Two mics are set up in the press room. As Brian pointed out, Bernie sparked a firestorm of Tweets about Carp possibly retiring.

Well, phooey.

The only good thing about this is that at least we have three guys ready to step in - Rosenthal, Miller and Kelly.

Here is what Goold says so far.  If he does retire, I'll sure miss him.

Re: Mo press conference - Chris Carpenter out

Surely he won't retire until season's end, as he would have to forfeit his $12.5 million salary of this yr.  Also, do we turn to Loshe now and attempt to discuss a contract with him?  Perhaps b/c of the lack of interest that has been shown in him this offseason, we could get him at a reasonable price for short term (I think short term is the major issue here).  And can we afford him if we're still paying Carp, w/ our payroll already at $110 mil?  Final thing to consider is losing draft pick compensation, but if we can get him at a reasonable price for short term contract I'm all for it based off the question marks surrounding Jaime also

It would be nice to reach out to Lohse but I think Mo made it clear that he's ready to roll out with Rosenthal, Kelly, Lynn and Miller to battle for 2 rotation spots.

Lance Lynn is the wild card in all of this. No one knows where he fits best.

Re: Mo press conference - Chris Carpenter out

Personally I think it would be silly to go after Lohse now.  We'd lose out on a draft pick (if he is ever signed that is), and we wouldn't be able to see what we have in our young guns.

Since we have four guys who have proved to be ready for big league starts in Kelly, Lynn, Rosenthal, and Miller, is there any way we could do stints in the bullpen and then the rotation for each?  Such as Miller and Lynn for the first couple months of the season, then Kelly and Rosenthal for a couple months, then repeat?  Or do we make one or a couple of them trade bait since we do have Martinez also waiting in the wings?  This seems to be a good problem to have, but I am curious to how Matheny plays the cards he has been dealt.

Also, does this mean we have to eat Carps salary if he sits out this year, or is he insured to wear we could possibly add 12ish million to our payroll elsewhere?

Get ready for Boras to start an onslaught of "Cards interested in Lohse" rumors.

Or we could stick with our own potential up and coming aces?

If we were to trade pitchers, the only positions I'd trade our pitchers for are SS and 2B.  I'd love to see Elvis Andrus wearing Cardinal Red.

EDIT: Dang it.  Didn't realize it was our lovely trade every Cardinal to the A's poster, Arly.  Should have known.

They need to catch Boras with PED's and ban him from baseball.

Hopefully Carpenter isn't done forever. Guy is a hell of a competitor.

Would Lohse already be signed if he wasn't a Boras client?
