Astros traded Lowrie to A's
two things:
One - I wonder if I (and others) were overvaluing Nakajima.
Two - Lowrie was had for Chris Carter, which is a little less value than Matt Adams. I don't know that I would have done that.

Two more things.
No Lowrie presents yet another opportunity for Tyler Greene.
Wallace doesn't appear to be a first baseman either.

The impression I got form the one article I read (I believe it was ESPN, but I'm not sure) was the A's are giving the edge (at least to being ST) for the SS position to Nakajima and Lowrie may be more of a utility player. So maybe it is Lawrie that is overvalued.

So maybe it is Lawrie that is overvalued. Or undervalued by some. The A's seem to have a feel for these kind of under the radar players. This Lowrie kid is pretty good as far as mid infielders go. He has yet to have a healthy season and is not spectacular but is solid. There is a reason Oakland gave up so much for him and it is not that they are stupid.

He hasn't played much at all due to injuries, even less than Furcal, despite his youth. Also, his road splits are really, really bad for both his career and it was even more pronounced last season. blingboy wrote: Two more things.

Wallace doesn't appear to be a first baseman either. I don't see this affecting Wallace as much as the Pena signing and presense of Singleton. Carter is an awful 1Bman, likely the worst in the league. He has played some OF too, but he is just as bad out there. Maybe the Astros would be ok with a bad fielding defensive LF since they've been trotting Carlos Lee out there for a long time. I'd say Carter sticks at DH. Wallace's time is probably gonna be shot due to Carlos Pena. Jonathan Singleton is their 20 year old masher down in AA too and he may be up mid-season. I'm not really sure why Ludnow is stockpiling first basemen like he is....odd.

RE: Astros traded Lowrie to A's
Interesting tweet from Keith Costas:
The Astros are down to $9.6M in pre-arb 2013 payroll. 27 of 29 other teams have at least 1 player making $9.6M or more.

RE: Astros traded Lowrie to A's
Luhnow is really taking it all the way down. Realistically, the Astros won't be any worse without Lowrie, so why spend the $2.4M. Once enough of their young players start to emerge to get to some kind of critical mass it will again make sense to pay players to help win a few more games. It will be an interesting story to watch play out over several years. If Luhnow fails, it will be epic.

Re: Astros traded Lowrie to A's
I may be in the minority here but IMO Lunhow was fleeced in this deal. Saw the Carter guy a few times last year and he looked like a AA player with a lot of power. Peacock stock has plummeted in the last year or so and many think he is a #4 at best. The also received a Minor league catcher who i admit i have never seen play, maybe he is the keeper there. Fernando Rodriguez goes to Oakland also.

Astros beat writer says shortstop may be a platoon with Greene and Marwin Gonzalez.
