The Cardinals' window of opportunity

The Cardinals' window of opportunity

In the Cedeno thread, nathan made the following assessment of the 2013 Cardinals:

"...a season in which you're not likely to make the playoffs anyway..."

It was a very timely comment as I had been thinking about a recent ESPN series in which they assessed the year in which each MLB team would have its best chance of going all the way.

I wrote about it here:

"Is the Cardinals' window of opportunity closing?"

It usually takes 2-3 years for high impact prospects to fully adjust to the majors. So I really think our better years are beyond 2013. Also it seems to me that Matheny is moving toward a team with more speed and defense. That will take time as well.

Health is a key factor for the Cards and any team. That and getting hot at the right time seem just as likely to go the Cards way in 2013 as any year in the future. Its great that the Cards can be counted on to field a competitive team year in and year out. I'd hate to go into a season knowing its a 'rebuilding' year.

The Astros are given a 2017 window. It wouldn't surprise me if Luhnow puts a good team on the field a year or two before that.

When the Astro's are contenders what kind of buying power do they bring to bear?

A's and M's have to be worried about 3 large market franchises being in the same division.. All 3 have good player development and cash to spend when needed..
