Road Trip advice
I'm graduating from law school this Spring and I'm hoping to take a road trip after graduation and was hoping to get some advice from some more experienced and local fans. I'm considering doing a baseball heavy road trip and wanted to know what you all think the best game to see would be if I could only see one in St. Louis.
I'll probably be stopping in Kansas City, Denver, and San Francisco on the way out and LA, Arizona, and Dallas on the way back but the only game I'd really plan around would be a quality home Cards game. I've been a Cards fan for a number of years but, being from Lexington, have only seen them on the road in Cincy and Atlanta and would really like to see a home game.
My question is, what would you consider to be the best atmosphere, day, team to see? I'll likely be going after graduation/Derby or after the Bar exam in July so my windows would be anytime May 5-25 or July 7-30.
Any thoughts on what to eat, drink, and be merry in the area would be appreciated as well.

Re: Road Trip advice
Congratulations on your achievements! The road trip sounds like a great idea, one that will leave many here steeping in envy. I'm sure others will have many more tips than myself, but I must advise on one thing: summer in St. Louis is hot.
During your May window of travel we have a weekend series at home against Milwaukee. Their recent form of success over the last few years has renewed a rivalry and made their fanbase a bit more keen to away travel. I've enjoyed those series quite a lot, especially when you get a chance to harass Nyjer Morgan (he's still on the team, right?).
The reason why I advise to look in May as opposed to July is that the dog days of summer tend to empty out the stadium. It isn't quite as electric in Busch when the temperatures are 100+ with the humidity equally as high. Tickets are dirt cheap (literally $1-$5 in the upper levels) because the average fan doesn't want to watch a baseball game in an oven. The most attractive home series during that window is probably Philly or Houston, neither of which are as exciting as seeing us play Milwaukee.
So your call: weekend series against Milwaukee in mild weather, while everyone is still optimistic about the season, or midweek-July against PHI/HOU during the blistering hot dog days of summer. I'd pick Milwaukee in May!

Ideally, I would like to travel in May but I am just not sure yet when I'll have to start studying for the Bar exam so that will dictate when I go I suppose. I'm guessing from general experience that Fri and Sat evening games get the best crowds and yall are only a days drive from me so I can easily plan the first stop. Do you all think it's even worth stopping in Kansas City for a game? I'll be there anyway for bbq and it'd be a shame to miss a stadium on the way out but the rest of the stops are mostly going to be planned around how convenient they are.

Re: Road Trip advice
Edit: I said July but meant August. Looks like an even better slate of games but I imagine the heat and crowds are much the same.

Don't allow DMENS to wimp you out, SmileyPete. Real baseball fans go to the ol' ballpark on 100+ degree days, real football fans go to see games in raging blizzards and real NBA fans....are becoming extinct.

RE: Road Trip advice
It's pretty hard to run into an under-whelming scene at Busch. I wouldn't even worry about that too much. The Cubs in early August or Reds in late August would be ideal, but get tickets early, especially for the Cubs. Avoid seats in RF unless you like the sun in your face.

Haha, agreed. I'm not as worried about my comfort as I am about experiencing a good game and atmosphere.

You know I'm up there, pugs, in the nosebleeds with my $1 ticket sweating out the 100+ degree heat. It's all the other suckers that don't come out that you got to "worry" about not showing up if you're looking for atmosphere.

Re: Road Trip advice
I went to a mid July week and saw 5 games one year, 2005, last year at the Old Bush. The 100 degree temps did not bother me one bit because I was just so excited to be there. Point is, you'll have a blast no matter the heat. Just go man, just go. The only thing I wonder about is how you could stand to leave after seeing only one game. Better paln for at least two or you'll be disappointed that you didn't. Side note; Let the fans around you know how far you have traveled to see the Cards. They'll treat you like royalty. They did me anyway.
No negative waves man!

They did me anyway. So far the tentative plan (mind you this is in the earliest possible stage) is: Aug 8 - Dodgers @ Cards Aug 9 - Red Sox @ Royals (not really into the AL but...well, it's there). Aug 10 - Pirates @ Rockies Aug 11 - obligatory family stop in Colorado / let the liver dry out Aug 12 - Trying not to catch bullet while visiting air force buddy in Sacramento Aug 13 - Astros @ A's Aug 14 - either hustle down to LA for the Mets @ Dodgers or take it easy for a few nights down Highway 1 on the California coast. Aug 16 - Astros @ Angels After that I have no idea. The Dbacks are on a road trip so there's no home game there (not that I'm too upset). There's not much between LA and Dallas...Maybe we'll catch a Albuquerque Isotopes game then grab a drink or 5 across the border, though I'm wary of drinking too much on the Mexican side of the border... Aug 18 - Mariner's @ Rangers. We'll need to hustle because the Astros play the 19th and I can't spend three of my stops watching the Astros. Obviously, we're skipping the Padre's and Astros. I don't think I need to explain that decision other than time and money make it a wise choice. If we fall behind schedule, we may skip family in Memphis and swing north for Braves @ Cards on the Aug 22.

Re: Road Trip advice
You are going to be one tired puppy! I am green with envy. Be sure to get to Bush a few hours before the game and take in the Cardinals Hall of Fame.
After the game, go to "Normal Behavior Not Required". Lots of Card fans will be there, and it is set up so that you can't help but to meet people. Al Hraboski owns the bar, he'll probably be there, and he was very freindly with my party when we where there.
No negative waves man!

Re: Road Trip advice
I wish I could do that.
Right now I've got earmarked opening day in Arizona for a 4 day vaca, Anaheim in July and maybe a stop in Chicago for the 2 game series if finances are in order.
I'll do Padres Opening Day and the Cards series in San Diego because I live here.

Re: Road Trip advice
Smiley,
Congratulations on graduating from law school and good luck on the bar exam. I graduated from law school a mere 36 years ago, but still remember the excitement of the moment.
Despite our difference in ages, I have been on 2 road trips over the last few years that entailed part of your upcoming journey. Last summer I drove my middle daughter from eastern North Carolina to Denver. Unfortunately, I had no control over our schedule, and we drove through St. Louis when the Cardinals were out of town. However,if you go a Cardinals game and leave early enough the next day, you will hit Kansas City midday. Therefore, stopping for a game there will slow your progress west, but you may not care.
It is a good one days haul from St. Louis to Denver, but it can be done if you get an early start.
I have another daughter who I helped drive from Santa Fe to NC in 2010. We drove to Norman, OK the first day, then up to St. Louis for a game. However, it appears you taking the mid America route west and the southern route east. It should be fun.
My advice is go after the bar course and hopefully the bar exam itself. Then you can let loose and not worry about the legal stuff.
Again congratulations and best of luck.

Funny thing, being a born and bred UK fan, I use to really dislike UNC because they are rivals and have such a similar stature in our states. Then when I became a student at UK (Grad and Undergrad so it was seven years ago) I started to meet UNC fans that traveled or attended and they were all a 100% pleasure to talk that I couldn't keep disliking the program. In fact, most seemed to say the same about UK and Lexington. I didn't really stop disliking UNC until I saw one UNC fan and his lady get harassed by Indiana fans at a Buffalo Wing Wings during the 2011 tournament and they came over and sat by us at the bar. Moral of the story: no one should have to put up with IU fans. That little aside wasn't the real reason I came to post. I have another question and you all seem pretty well versed on the crowd etiquette. We've decided that we'll clearly want to do some tailgating at each stadium so we're bringing the necessary tent, cornhole boards, coolers, ect. We obviously want to taste the local food at each venue and we don't really want to haul a grill and cooler of meat cross country so I had this idea: I have access to a pretty good deal on some of my favorite bourbon (Basil Hayden 8yr). I know I've gone to tailgates at Auburn and Clemson with a few bottles of Kentucky Bourbon and been welcomed like family to a good tailgate. Do you all think 2-3 guys could join a tailgate and eat for free this way or would just get odd looks?

You'll have a tough time tailgating in SF seeing as I recall none of the parking lots are close to the field and if they are IDK where they'd park. Stadiums like San Diego, Milwaukee, Anaheim and Dodgers Stadium have huge lots next to the Stadium and some do have tailgating restrictions. Tailgating isn't exactly a baseball friendly thing although Milwaukee fans do it regularly. You'd have to speak to other posters on other stadiums.

Re: Road Trip advice
Congrats, Smiley!
I'm a fan of minor league parks. All of them have been different, but I've yet to run into one I've not enjoyed. Well, there was Tulsa for a beastly hot day game where I had to leave my seat for the shade....
If you want a Cards' farm team game, Springfield plays in Midland, Texas on August 16-18. Haven't been to see a game there yet. Just a thought. I've seen the Tucson Stadium and enjoyed it, but that's the only one west of Tulsa. If you're in Tuscon, try at El Guero Canelo. Alas, they don't serve 'em at the stadium, at least, not the last time I was there.
Trip sounds like a blast. Enjoy!
