3. Martinez
4. Rosenthal
5. Wong
6. Wacha
7. Adams
8. Jenkins
9. Kelly
10. Piscotty

Different order than ours in the middle, but the top eight names are the same. Anthony Garcia is the one we have who missed out on the BA list.

The Martinez-Wacha difference is notable, especially based on the discussion here.

Re: Baseball America Cardinals Top 10 Prospects

I have never been clear as to how much input Derrick Goold has in the BB America Cards prospect rankings (versus the BB America writers) in light of his insights with the Cards, being in St. Louis and being the beat writer, but that question is relevant to the discussion as to why Garcia is not part of this Top 10.  Was that Derrick's omission with input from the Cards or was that a BB America decision without any input from the Cards?

Unless it changed this year, Derrick has considerable input, but BA makes the decisions on their rankings. After all, it is their name and reputation.

Which Kelly are they talking about, Joe or Carson?

Joe shouldn't be eligible anymore, so I assume it is Carson.

Anthony Garcia will probably be all over the board among rating entities. So far on the ones I have.

Baseball America - not in top 10 still 20 to go in the Prospect Handbook

Sickels - 9th

MLB (Mayo) - not in top 20

BB Instinct - 9th

Gateway - 19th

Prospect Alert - 16th

Fan Graphs - not in top 15

Future Redbirds - 10th

Scouting Book - not in top 17

I seem to recall that BA overrode Gould on Taveras two years ago and ended up ranking Oscar 24th.

Yes, 24th. Here are a few of the various views of Oscar over time:

Taveras BA TCN My ranking
2013 1 1 1
2012 3 3 3
2011 24 11 5

Re: Baseball America Cardinals Top 10 Prospects

Jim Callis goes on to say that Miller is his #5 overall pick in MLB with Taveras ahead of him as the top hitting prospect in the game. That is a major change as Oscar was not in his personal top 50 last year. Miller was #12.

Remember that Callis' ranking is not the same as the overall BA ranking. Last year, they had four writers' top 50s listed separately in the Prospect Handbook.

BA writer J.J. Cooper was most optimistic about Taveras last year, ranking him #49 in MLB. Taveras was not on the others' lists.

We see Gould over at the Horse track a lot. He loves horses so he is not all bad but i pay little attention to him when it comes to the Cardinals. Guy is top notch when it comes to Hockey though, i will give him that.

GO CARDS!

Getting the conversation back to prospects, Callis says Swagerty and Tilson will be #18 and #19 in BA's Cardinals top 30. Both dropped after missing last season due to injury.

Callis was on Rob Rains' radio program this afternoon for about 30 minutes.  He was really high on the "number" of legitimate Cardinal prospects up and down the system.  Callis likes Tilson.  Sounded as if one of Callis' boys played high school / summer baseball with Tilson, thus he has seen the young centerfielder play numerous times.  Rains usually tapes his interviews and places them on his radio website.  The Callis interview is worth listening too.  Callis also stated that he covers the Midwest League so he sees all the young Cardinals coming thru Quad Cities and now Peoria.

I think it is a little early for Piscotty to the bet OF arm since he hasn't played there as a pro and didn't even play there much in college.    Wasn't Jackson the best defensive infielder last year?  did he get worse or did Kozma get better?  Can't believe there isn't a better defensive non-hit SS in the system - Gil?

Seems like they are jumping early on Tilson, too. Didn't he only play a handful of late games last year after a shoulder injury?

Tilson didn't appear in any official minor league games in 2012, but did appear in 8 games coming out of HS in 2011 after being drafted in the 2nd round and getting that huge signing bonus. Should be added he played in the Instructional League and reportedly impressed scouts. Will be interesting to see where he starts out at next year.

Think it was early for Bean to be rated the best defensive catcher in the system given how raw he is defensively but you have to like the potential plus glove behind the plate. I would of thought Ehlrich or Perez would be given the best defensive catcher credential.

Ehlrich has this strong defensive reputation but (according to another site) supposedly Vuch said at the WWU that they like Ehlrich's bat but he has a long way to go defensively
