DeLeon biggest suprise.
But after Miller, Rosenthal, Martinez and Wacha he is probably the hardest thrower among the rest of the Cardinal pitchers. And he has a good slider as well.

Re: Baseball Instincts-St Louis Cardinals 2013 top 21 prospects
I saw both DeLeon and Tuivailala pitch in the same game. Both were in the mid-90's but DeLeon was a tick faster and he was starting and Sam relieving. I was impressed with both particularly since it was the first year that Sam was pitching as a pro.
The scout I talked to was also impressed with both. I don't know what team he belonged (the scout) to. I just spoke to him briefly and wanted to know what breaking pitches they were throwing. He said that DeLeon was throwing a slider and that most Latin pitchers threw sliders. Sam was throwing a curve.
DeLeon struck out more hitters with his slider than his fastball. I saw him pitch three times and the last time he seemed to be mixing in a sinker. That made him more dominant as the hitters seemed to be squaring up his regular fastball at times.

Cory Jones? Kevin Jacob? Sam Tuivailala? Kevin Jacob has been released. Thank you. My recollection was that he had one phenomenal summer in Alaska and was voted the top pitching prospect; but, he couldn't recapture that magic after returning to school.

DeLeon is legit. He also was a better "pitcher" than I expected. In fact he has 2 breaking pitches and the coaching staff didn't really know it until they watched him in a scrimmage game.

DeLeon throws harder than Miller and Wacha. If you want a list of hard throwers in the organizaton the Top 3 are Rosenthal, Cleto and then probably DeLeon.

VS Tuivailala, De Leon seems less impressive. Sam is younger, has a higher K rate and started, as a pitcher, at the Appalachian League--the the level achieved by De Leon in his 3rd year. Victor was a starter, as opposed to being a reliever, and had a lower BB rate; but he threw fewer than 45 innings in his 3rd year. Injury issues? Significant time in Jupiter? His career-high IP is 50.1 (baseball-reference.com). Why so few IPs?

DeLeon was injured for part of the 2012 season. He was OK when I saw him pitch late in the season. He actually pitched the last playoff game and lost 3-2.

I can just say that DeLeon was impressive in games he pitched this Spring.
