RE: TCN 2013 Cardinals Prospect #13: James Ramsey
I tried hard to find anything at all that could be interpreted as positive in Ramsey's 2012 results, and I came up empty. (Caveat: I have never seen him play) I was especially troubled by his failure to pull out of the nosedive and get it together as the year wore on. I would have expected that based on the reports of him being a top shelf make-up guy. And the Cards have stumbled with advanced college hitters before.
I agree that starting from the beginning, a full ST, might make all the difference for him. If so, I will happily admit that I missed the boat.

I have seen Ramsey play many games in person. If he does not pan out, I will be very very surprised. His don't lose mentality and leadership abilities will come out this year. We will be happy that he is a Redbird IMO.

Re: TCN 2013 Cardinals Prospect #13: James Ramsey
I'm right there with DB and CC on the Ramsey bullish ranking. I think he is going to good.
He posted the highest ISO in the wooden bat Cape league and nearly a .300 ISO at Florida State last season.
I think he will be premium player for us. For one, he should stick in CF and that's where he played exclusively at Palm Beach. Secondly, I believe the power will come around for him next year (as a Cardinal). Third, he displayed some good BB%, despite clearly struggling last year. Finally, he has plus speed as demonstrated by the 10 SBs in 12 chances in only 55 games.

I have a can't lose mentality when it comes to baseball, but that doesn't make me a prospect. No, Ramsey is going to pan out because he has elite skills and one half-season in Palm Beach is not going to discredit my opinion of him on that.

Re: TCN 2013 Cardinals Prospect #13: James Ramsey
I do believe intangible qualities can make a huge difference between comparable talents (eg: Weaver brothers or Anthony Reyes/Greg Maddux, etc.); and that's the primary reason I can wait another season before celebrating/damning his selection.
I agree that the A+ placement was somewhat aggressive by the org. Yet, he's 23 and in a competitive situation as far as the farm is concerned (Tilson, etc.); and he was paid like he was expected to succeed, or even excel, with Palm Beach; so I'm not ready to grant him a mulligan either. A #13 ranking, IMO, is a reach at this time.

RE: TCN 2013 Cardinals Prospect #13: James Ramsey
I forgot to mention it in the article, but Ramsey and Maness actually tied at #13, but Ramsey won the tie-breaker since his best placement at #10 (by CC) beat Maness' best at #12 (also from CC).
Other ties were: Starlin Rodriguez and Patrick Wisdom at #17, Boone Whiting and Eduardo Sanchez at #25, Eric Fornataro and Maikel Cleto at #27 and Tim Cooney and Keith Butler at #39 (tie-breaker winners listed first).

RE: TCN 2013 Cardinals Prospect #13: James Ramsey
Ramsey was ranked #11 on fangraphs and was in the others receiving votes on sickels site (#20-30-ish)
With a #13 here, I would say the #15-16 average of the placements is pretty good.
We will have to see where Baseball America puts him (released January 16th) to make a final verdict, but I'm ok with this.

I hear what your saying pads, but I think that it can make a difference. It just seems to me that when you have a player that constantly comes through in the clutch, you will usually find leadership qualities and tenacity are the things that his coaches see in him. I have been on the field for a lot of baseball games and I began to know players that I was around a great deal, the ones with all the physical skills and the intangibles, were the guys that just always seemed to come through. I respect your opinion greatly, mine is just a little different.

HH - I see what you're saying now. You first post implied that he was some Rudy or Tebow type of player. Ramsey is a very skilled baseball player too was my only point.

I am just curious as i admittedly know very little about last years picks. From what i have heard Ramsey is considered to be a special player by a few in biz. Just like Wacha we should get a good look at him for a full season this year and will know a lot better but i am liking what i hear as far as long term projections.

Re: TCN 2013 Cardinals Prospect #13: James Ramsey
Kind of difficult to get a sense when he'll arrive he played 56 games for Palm Beach and didn't do well offensively. It was a tough assignment though, a challenge coming out of college already fatigued. You should be able to get a much better sense of his Major League arrival after the 2013 season. Considering he got drafted as a 22 year old I'd bet he gets challenged with a promotion to AA. If he does well in 2013 at AA he most certainly could be in the bigs by 2014. I'd assume the Cardinals will be aggressive with him.

Logical projecting has him in AA for 2013 and AAA for 2014. I honestly don't know though. I can only go by what I read and what stats he puts up.

I did not express myself very well did I? I agree that 2014 is pushing it with regards to MLB debut. Given the natural way things seem to work, 2015 is a safe bet IMO.

Re: TCN 2013 Cardinals Prospect #13: James Ramsey
Anyone have any idea how his speed (and defensive skills) stacks up against Tilson and McElroy--other younger, early draft picks--and Jeffries?

There is a doubt. Breyvic Valera may be faster, Steven Ramos may be as fast and Starlin Rodriquez may be as fast.
