Angels close to signing Josh Hamilton
According to Yahoo's Tim Brown. If this deal gets done the Angels would have the best offense in baseball by far.

Looks like it is a done deal. "Only five years?" asks Albert. ;-)

Re: Angels close to signing Josh Hamilton
There must be something in the water in LA causing them to try and sign every major player in the MLB.

Time to pick up Bourjos. He should be available, now.

Wow! Come out of nowhere to sign the top position player on the market again.

Both of these franchises will spend to try and get a title. Yeah, but I think the buying of titles is silly, and an even greater gamble than betting on the farm. In a few years, they are going to be eating a ton of salary for a lot of old and mediocre players.

Re: Angels close to signing Josh Hamilton
The fact that both these teams have absolutely gigantic TV deals allows them to spend money like that. I think both the Angels and Dodgers each have 3 billion dollar TV deals over 20 or so years. I obviously don't know how those contracts are structured, but it averages out to about 150 million dollars a year or so.

Going to enjoy watching the Angels fail. This is just stupid.

Pujols is dead to me. I hate LA in each and every possible way except I'm a stupid Clippers fan. I loved the old Buffalo Braves when I was a kid. I pretended to be Bob McAdoo on my Nerf goal every night. I grew into a Clipper fan, and they made me miserable for decades. Now I can root for them with pride, but I've always kind of associated them with the Angels for some reason, and now even that weird connection makes me upset.
Going to enjoy watching the Angels fail. This is just stupid.
Me too. Their offense is stellar, but I just doubt they have to pitching win it all. Heck, I think the A's might still win the division.

Gave tons of great memories and will be remembered as a Cardinal all time great. He just got woo'd by a sweet talker and given a boatload. Moreno stroked his ego like a college recruiting trip. Mo and DeWitt just treated it like a business decision and used that to try to convince Pujols that they couldn't afford what he wanted.

Scadder put it about as good as one could have. I also think blowing tons of money to buy a title can be risky but if you have the money to blow then you can do it and shake it off if it doesn't work. You might have a PR disaster but teams can sometimes buy their way out of things. Some can't! We are not as fortunate. We have to rely on the farm for some of our talent and have to rely on sly FA aquisitions and trades for others. It's not like we don't spend. We just have to be careful when we do.

Being a life long Cards fan, if I was in the position of Pujols there's a good chance I might have said whatever and taken DeWitt's offer, but if I was a poor kid form the DR, I'm sure I would have taken Moreno's offer. I really don't want to open this can of worms again, but I still have many fond memories of Pujols. Especially when he ruined Brad Lidge's career and showed Houston what a home run really was (that ridiculous game against the Rangers stands out to).

RE: Angels close to signing Josh Hamilton
Hamilton might see a bit of a decline in his power production going from Arlington to Anaheim, but when he's on he can practically carry a team. The Angels are built to win in the next two or three years. After that, they'll be paying a ton for a couple of years for Pujols and Hamilton and could be getting little value in return. And of course Pujols' deal will keep going awhile. At least they cut Hamilton's to half the time.
