TCN 2013 Cardinals Prospect #32: Mike O’Neill

Who is betting against the on-base machine after he tore up three leagues in 2012?

O'Neill is one of my personal favorites.  I have a very big soft spot in my heart for players that do better than their draft status indicates they should.

more interesting dichotomy regarding all the lists.

in this case, due to the community (41) he fell a bit in overall average. did the math; between carioca and brian, he'd be 27.5. while we probably did undervalue him a bit, they might have overvalued and hence a pretty good averaging regarding him for the most part.

other interesting bits i noticed:
- ehrlich was 34, but none of the 3 lists had him even that high
- i think we totally sabotaged brian and carioca's ranking of cody stanley (still unranked)

the math doesn't work that way since we sometimes dont vote for the same people.  In fact O'Neill was not ranked as high as 27th on either of our lists.  (but not far off)

yea i typed all that before forgetting about ehrlich.

my math was multiple 32 by 3, subtract the 41 by the community and then dividing that by 2. that how i got 27.5. but i forgot how 1 group undervaluing certain players can affect an average ranking, ala how ehrlich was 34 w/o even being ranked that high by any list. i'm intrigued to see the final tallies which will be released at the end of the 40 day feature.

ONeill played 4 years at USC.  Scouts were not impressed.  He was not drafted as a junior, went at a low round after his senior year.  He must not profile well as a center fielder.  If good at defending CF, he might have collected a large signing bonus, like Ramsey.
ONeill's tremendous ability to get on base makes him interesting, anyway.  He could become a crowd pleasing overachiever.

Doesn't profile as a center fielder but can play all three OF positions averagely.

His tremendous ability to put the ball in play is intriguing as well as getting on base.

O'Neill's walk to strike out ratio keeps getting more and more insane. He's a freak. No trouble with the pitching in Arizona. Will be fun to see if he's a non-roster invitee or early invitee this spring, or at least gets borrowed for the occasional B game.
