Other upcoming pitching contracts and Wainwright
I think it is nuts the kind of contract they are talking about for Greinke. He is a headcase and never really had more than 1 really good year. If they are talking about him getting 6 yrs at 23M+ or whatever, imagine what Wainwright can get That means 1 of 2 things will happen. He'll either want an extension in with a similar base, or he'll hit free agency. I do know one thing however. All you people talking about trading away our starting pitching prospects need to pause and take into account we might be replacing 3 starters (including Wainwright) in 2014.

Re: Zack Greinke's upcoming contract and Wainwright
You won't find a bigger Wainwright fan than me, but that said, Waino is not going to command the money that Greinke will and shouldn't. Greinke is 2 years younger and doesn't have the injury history that Waino does. And it's not true that Greinke only had one good year. Greinke's WAR by year was 4.9 in 2008. 9.3 in 2009, 5.1 in 2010, 4.0 in 2011 and 5.1 in 2012. By contrast, Waino's WAR: 2.2 in 2008, 5.7 in 2009, 6.1 in 2010 and 4.4 in 2012.
"Head case" is a nebulous term and I don't think it means that much when assessing value, because he hasn't had a Rick Ankiel/Khalil Greene type of breakdown.

RE: Zack Greinke's upcoming contract and Wainwright
2009 he was great. every other yr he was good. my point is that its not enough for him to get a contract that'd eclipse sabathia's and that whatever he gets will be a barometer for wainwright's extension. and if that barometer is too high, it increases the odds of wainwright leaving.

Re: Zack Greinke's upcoming contract and Wainwright
Greinke signed with the Dodgers for six years, $147 million.
That brings the Dodgers 2013 payroll to over $225 million, the highest in MLB history according to Jon Heyman. Their opening day payroll in 2012 was $105 million. And they're reportedly going after Anibal Sanchez as well.

It's coming sooner than we think. You guys might think I'm cRraZy, but my money is on the Pirates in the year 2028. All it takes is for some young free-wheeling multibillionaire to buy them out.

I put up a post that concludes with a poll about how the readers think the Cardinals should prepare for the 2014 rotation. Feel free to weigh in if the subject interests you.

Re: Zack Greinke's upcoming contract and Wainwright
Man, the Dodgers way overpaid for Greinke. First, he's a bit of strange guy. Second, you take on a ton of risk making that kind of obligation to a pitcher. This risk is there with any guaranteed deal, but pitcher's are a higher risk than position players.
The Dodgers are becoming Yankees-west. We'll see if it buys them a flag.

RE: Zack Greinke's upcoming contract and Wainwright
The Dodgers are spending at least $233 million next year including the salary tax. This is the most expensive team in the world, ever. Even more expensive than the free-spending soccer clubs around the globe. And the crazy thing is, it isn't that crazy. As Jeff Passan noted, the Dodgers will make in six games what some franchises make for an entire season in TV revenue. They actually have the money to spend.
Anyone think Lohse will be next?

Anyone think Lohse will be next? Certainly if Boras has anything to say about it... ;-)

Anyone think Lohse will be next? I don't care what they spend. I still think the Cards are better. (Not that you don't, just saying) Put them side-by-side....

Re: Zack Greinke's upcoming contract and Wainwright
Look out! The price of pitching continues to escalate. Felix Hernandez on verge of record seven-year, $175 million contract with Mariners that soon will be official, says Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY. It covers his ages 27-33. Waino's new deal will begin with his age 32 season.

Re: Other upcoming pitching contracts and Wainwright
I wouldn't offer anything over 4 years for sure and it's been a Cardinal rule not to go over those terms in the Dewitt era.
Is he worth 20 million a season? I don't think so and even if he has a Cy Young type season like Lohse did I think the Cardinals wouldn't give him more than a 3 year deal with a club option.

RE: Other upcoming pitching contracts and Wainwright
With Carpenter being out, I think they will wait to see how this year plays out before re-signing Wainwright. If Miller, Rosenthal, Lynn and Wacha perform well this season, they will pull a Pujols waiting game. If it looks like they could be thin at SP in 2014, they will be more aggressive in re-signing Wainwright.

I'm sure Martinez's development will be closly watched as well. Martinez could be in the mix, as well. Something about Kelly makes me feel that he is best suited for the 'pen. I don't see him being a borderline #2/#3 starter. The others have all been mentioned as being able to be #2 starters or better. To replace Wainwright, we would need to make sure at least 2 of the 5 would achieve #2 quality.

Re: Other upcoming pitching contracts and Wainwright
Wainwright contract discussions on hold, per Post-Dispatch. Meanwhile, the King Felix deal is supposedly done this time. They still think it is going to be seven years, $175 million, with the signing Wednesday.

Re: Other upcoming pitching contracts and Wainwright
Good for King Felix... Nice to see him stay in Seattle... At least we don't have to hear about him going to Yankees every other week anymore...
At this point what ever happens with Waino happens IMO.... If Cards really want to get it done it will get done... And IF Waino really wants to stay it will get done.... Simple as that....
