I'm guessing either low dollars or an option year, but we will see.

Wow! 7.5 MILLION for a 37 year-old Loggy! Really? Who was the last 40 year old pitcher to play for the Cards?

Burnett gets 2 year deal from Angels.

3 years seems like 1 year to many, and if it really 7.5mil PER year then Mo has lost it, especially for a 37 year old.

Burnett take 9M/2 from Angels?
Good idea to leave him, for us

dgoold Choate will come to St. Louis on Friday for physical. That will finalize three-year, $7.5 million contract with #cardinals

Not sure what to think about this deal. 3 years is a bit much for a 37 year old loogy. That's probably the only move Mozeliak will make at the winter meetings.

3 years is long for a 37 year-old,  But the $2.5M AAV is not bad.

Relax TC...

It is $2.5M PER, $7.5M total.  I am not thrilled with this signing, but I hope it works out well.

I am hearing ya TC on this one. I was thinking 2 yrs at 2 Mill a year for this guy. He was probably the 2nd best lefty on the FA yet to sign. Angels gave up 4 Mill a year for the better pitcher but these Loogy types are unpredictable sometimes. seems like a bit of a reach, just hoping they wanted to settle this now so that Moz can get on to bigger things tomorrow. Side note: My bet is Choate does two years tops in the Lou. Lefties are a valuable commodity at the trade deadline. wink

GO CARDS!

Re: Randy Choate Signed for 3 years

3 years is definitely long, but it makes sense on the AAV.  If this guy can get lefties out consistently 2 out of those 3 years this will be a decent signing.  Spending money on LOOGYs is very frustrating since they are so hit or miss, but not having an effective one on the roster is even more annoying.

Mark me down as satisfied with the signing under the pretense that it is a necessary evil.  I will be even more happy when our formula for developing a pipeline of solid+ RH relievers transfers over to the southpaws.

RE: Randy Choate Signed for 3 years

They may have needed to go 3 years in order to back load the contract. The Post is reporting the Contract is 1.5M/3M/3M and includes incentives. Other lefties might not of wanted the back loaded deal that allows the Cards a little more flexibility this winter.

Would have preferred a 2 year, or even 1 year agreement with an option, but this was probably what it took to get him. We need help on the left side of the 'pen, and Burnett's deal was a little steep so I don't mind this other than a little hesitation about that 3rd year.

It's nice to see that for the most part Cardinals fans are pretty rational. Of course we'd all love to see risk completely minimized, but the reality is this was what it took to sign the guy. As you alluded to, I don't think we over-reached.

Another benefit of signing him now is that unless he bombs, we (hopefully) won't need to go shopping for a LOOGY at the deadline again. In the long run, it might be cheaper to sign this type of guy than it would be to trade for one in the summer.

By the way, Derrick Goold just said in his C-Beat chat that the Cardinals have tried more than once to trade for Choate. Guess they finally got their guy.

I agree 100%, but it is done so I hope it works out.

That's probably the only move Mozeliak will make at the winter meetings.

Since our 40-man roster is full, we won't be taking anyone in rule 5 draft.  So... yeah, I think you're right on this also.
