Cards among five teams "in" on SS Stephen Drew
So says ESPN's Jim Bowden. Others are Yankees, Red Sox, Tigers and A's.

If Furcal is healthy and I guess that is always a question, why would we be going after Drew?

If Raffy is healthy you move him to 2nd base where the throws are shorter and his diminishing range play better. Drew had a horrid injury two years ago but seemed to be coming on at the end of last season. He played pretty well the last month or so and is a steadier defender than Furcal or Kozma. He could be a bounce back type of player. I am surprised the Yanks are in on this one though. Drew also would not cost us any players. I think Drew improves the team at least for this season anyway. The second thing that makes sense is that it could be a bit of posturing, putting it out there that we DO have other options and are not desperate for a shortstop. Sometimes it is just a bluff in December.
GO CARDS!

Could provide more flexibility up the middle along with one of the two to playing significant time of second base, that would allow Descalso to still be used as a super utility guy which he projects best as. Assuming Furcal's isn't dumped. Another logical reasoning is the Cardinals usually never win bidding wars, so he probably isn't going to be playing in St. Louis next season. But at least they'll only be losing money if he come here and fails. Cabera or any other premium shortstop on the trade market would cost money and prospects. Better risk management with Drew in my opinion.

I don't see any indication on Baseball Reference that Drew has ever played 2nd base in the majors or the minors.

If the Cardinals seek to upgrade at SS (Drew, trade for JJ Hardy, etc.), IMO, their plan would have to be to move Furcal to 2B for the one year remaining on his contract as a perfect bridge to Wong taking over by Opening Day 2014. Just hypothetically, a Hardy-Furcal middle of the infield would likely upgrade both positions over Furcal-Descalso.

I don't mind so much picking up Drew as a back up SS for Furcal. But as a starting SS with Furcal at 2B, that I am not too keen on. Drew can't hit, which by itself wouldn't be a deal breaker for me, but his defense has suffered as a result of that ankle injury or at least it was way off last season.

Re: Cards among five teams "in" on SS Stephen Drew
Conditioned on the price being somewhat reasonable I am much more interested in Drew as a free agent opposed to giving up top pospects for him.
Not a bad gamble. Probably a good backup at worst and maybe the St Louis effect will help him to the comeback of the year player. Wouldn't be the first time someone benefited from our very positive environment.
Having said that I wonder if there are ill feelings among the Drews over the problems his brother had with the Cardinals.

Message to Mo: Say "NO" (to Drew).

Not sure what to think about this one. I guess if we could get him for a reasonable price, then in a year or two deal him for three good pitchers like we did his brother, then I'm okay with it!

Red Sox signed Drew for a $9.5M deal.
Much too risky for our blood.

Heyman says Drew to Red Sox on a one-year deal. Red Sox fans will boo him just like his brother.

They mostly bood JD those last couple years when he came even less close to earning his salary than earlier on. If his brother does the same he'll get bood too. At least Stephen has shown an inclination to get on the field everyday which is nothing at all like his slacker cry baby brother.

Uh, perhaps you missed this quote from Diamondbacks managing partner Ken Kendrick in June. “I’m going to be real direct about Stephen (Drew),” Kendrick said, “I believe Stephen should have been out there playing before now. Frankly, I for one am disappointed. I’m going to be real candid and say I think Stephen and his representatives are more focused on where Stephen’s going to be a year from now than going out and supporting the team that’s paying his salary.”
