Wow.....96! What I wouldn't give to have had the opportunity to speak to this gentleman. Not only about Cardinal stuff, but real life things as well. I must confess to having been guilty of something. For most of my life when I passed a real elderly person on the street or saw one sitting on a park bench, I'd say hello to them if they looked my way, but it was with no real feelings. It's almost as if in my eyes they were already dead because they were so old. Then a few years back my stupidity with this issue really hit me. Ever since, I've tried very hard to start conversations with these seasoned strangers whenever I can. And boy am I glad that I did. It's mind boggling the things that you can learn from them. Most of them didn't get to that advanced age by being ignorant.

He wasn't the oldest former Cardinal, but 89 years old is a long life, still. Chuck Diering passed away on Friday.
