In this interview, BDWIII goes into great detail about the uniform details.

The Reds' new alternate uniform is targeted at the Spanish-speaking segment of the market.

Sort of like those Giants "Gigantes" uniforms.

In an MLB merchandising play, all 30 teams are getting new batting practice caps this coming season. The Cardinals are going navy, which I think is considerably better than a number of other clubs' caps.

Re: New Cardinals alternate uniform

The Cardinals BP caps are those '40s and early '50s style caps, which are pretty cool. Last time I was at a game, which was in 2009, I went to the merchandise shop at the stadium looking for one of those as I was sure they would have them.

They had a lot of variations of caps, but no '40s style so I ended up ordering one online from a place that carried them.

I also wanted a navy blue batting helmet, but could not find those anywhere. I thought the reason for all these alternative colors and styles was to sell more merchandise. I was a willing customer, but they did not have what I was looking for.

The Mets new cap is hideous! The Reds is pretty cool. The Braves is just awful. The A's, I can't decide. All four qualify for great tee ball caps. I'm glad ours is still designed for grown men!

BDIII on Saturday Retro Uniforms

Very interesting interview with Bill DeWitt III from last November in which he discusses the new Saturday retro uniforms.  Thought I'd post it here in case others hadn't seen it either.

Re: BDIII on Saturday Retro Uniforms

Great Q&A. I agree with DeWiit that the piping on those alternate uni's is cool. A few years ago we wore replica 1947 uniforms, and that was one of the neat things about them. Wainwright pitched that game too as I recall - we played the Reds in Cincinnati on ESPN.

Anyway, the one place we disagree, but about everyone on here agrees with DeWitt, is in the road hats. I love the navy blue and hope we keep wearing it on the road at least now and then. The red is great too, but I like the distinction when the blue hats are worn on the road, and I think they look sharp that the red "STL" and all.

And I agree with DeWitt on the modern style where the pants cover the socks - I'm not real big on it. I like the old school style where you saw the socks. Josh Outman of the Rockies uses that late '60s/70s style with the long stirrup socks. I like that look - just looks like a baseball uniform whereas the long pants look like pajamas.

I prefer the navy caps as well.

Re: BDIII on Saturday Retro Uniforms

I, on the other hand, prefer the red caps.  We're the Redbirds, not the Bluebirds.

I do agree about the long pants.  I'm just waiting for somebody to get their cleats caught in those baggy things while trying to run the bases.

There's a famous story about Jose Cardenal, when he was in winter ball, refusing to play because his uniform wasn't tight enough.

Edit:  Just read the article.  Great article.  And glad BDIII agrees with me about the red hats and the baggy uniforms.  I do disagree with him about the circular logo though.  I *love* that logo; indeed, I have a patch with that logo sitting on my dashboard (I refuse to put bumper stickers on my car).

How are the red and blue caps being designated?

It is apparently a rough plan to wear red unless the other team's caps are red, in which case they wear blue.

I hate the cuff dragging look. They might as well also have their boxers showing and their hat on sideways.

At the Winter Warm Up after BDWIII gave a talk I had a chance to ask him about it. He said players are encouraged to wear the uni in the traditional way with the high socks.

I don't mind blue hats now and then. I am still not really sold on the larger, slightly different looking birds in the birds on the bat.

We did where the navy blue caps in Philadelphia, so that makes sense. Although I think in Arizona we wore red.

I just like the blue because it brings in some tradition, where we wore those home and road in the late '50s through '63, then road-only in '64 same as the last 20 years or so, plus I like the look. Now they do make us look real similar to the Red Sox, who have the same color style on their caps and uniforms with red lettering and red socks (needless to say). But it's a sharp look. Now that the navy blue caps are limited, I'd love to see them worn at home occasionally, like maybe for holiday games or something. Course MLB now has those red-white-blue insignias used for holiday games.

As for cap insignia's, I agree with DeWitt that you usually want your city's initials on the caps. The Atheltics have always gone with an A (or A's today) on their caps though, except for their time in Kansas City when they had the KC. I'm not big into insignias, although if they limit them, like the Cardinals do with Sunday home games, that's okay. The White Sox have had "SOX" on their caps for a long time, which is okay I suppose. They've had various caps with a "C" also, but those are rare in the modern era.

I like the Astros uniforms this year. They've gone back to a more traditional style and gotten away from that sort of flying star deal they had. Unfortunately the team is so bad, I hope the uniforms don't get a stigma to them.

The team coming in tonight, the Mets, look like they've finally returned to their traditional uniforms. Those uni's and caps with a lot of black in them were bad.
