As a general point, I find putting the city name on any home jersey very odd - of course, until you realize they can't sell them on the road...

But they can sell road jerseys at home.

I am a fan of these. Very nice IMO. I like that it's a throwback but at the same time it isn't.

I dig it.  A lot.  I figured it was only a matter of time before a third jersey came along, and in my belief it could have been way worse.  The retro yet new feel is something that hockey has IMO perfected, and it seems the Cardinals are trying to duplicate this, to which I am ok with!

Re: New Cardinals alternate uniform

So we will have alternate caps for Sunday and alernate Jerseys for Saturday games?

Why not just make home Sunday games both with the cap and jersey? I have a feeling we will get some negative feedback from the press/traditionalists on this especially when most of our games are televised nationally. Naturally I see what they're doing though by putting the uni's on a higher profile day for baseball.

I tend to be a traditionalist. I love the regular uniforms. However, I'm somewhat taken with the new look.

It's interesting that Bill DeWitt said that the Cardinal fans would hearken back to the days of Musial and Brock when they see the new unis. However, the basic look hasn't changed much since 1964 when the Cardinals acquired Brock.

I didn't catch the bit about the red hat for the road uni's.  This makes the news even better!  The look is definitely going to feel weird for a while, but red hats on the road is something I've always wanted them to do!

Also, I hope these new third uni's have mandatory tall socks.  I think it will look mighty weird if they do not.

Tall socks will not be mandatory, though the "tall socks Sundays" players are discussing among themselves the idea of expanding to home Saturdays.

I summarized the uniform changes and put up a simple poll. Please vote if you are interested.

Re: New Cardinals alternate uniform

With the 2013 uniform changes being implemented, I wish the Cardinals would go with old-time solid black spikes or the solid red spikes.  I don't like the red spikes with the broad white edging around the shoe and on the toe.  I sometimes think that the broad white edging around the toe of the shoe cost the Cardinals on bang-bang plays at first base.  If the umpire is looking at the player's foot and listening for the ball to hit the glove....I think an all black or an all red shoe would give the umps a clearer look of the foot hitting the first-base bag.

The team can dictate shoe color but most of the players have brand contracts. I recall when a player was traded to the Cards mid-season a couple of years back, the clubhouse attendants were busily changing his shoe color as a temporary move until his supplier could get the proper new ones shipped in.

Dewitt may have been referring to the piping, which is rather 40's-ish.  But the team hasn't had the city name on the uniform since 1932, and I guess Dewitt figured he wouldn't score many points by hearkening back to the days of Gabby Street and Wild Bill Hallahan. ;)

Big thumbs up for me. And for the red road caps, as well.

Re: New Cardinals alternate uniform

I really like the style of the new jerseys. I'm a big fan of the piping, and I like the cream-colored look. I wouldn't want them to go with that as the main home uniform, because I love how white the home whites look. I think it's one of the best uniforms in sports.

I do wish the home alternates said "Cardinals" and that they permanently put "St. Louis" in script on the road jerseys. That's the norm in baseball, but I suppose it's a minor thing. I also think the road greys could use piping, because they have always looked dull to me. Maybe the red hat and red belt will change that, we will see.

I really like the blue road caps, so I'm glad to see they aren't totally eliminating them. I actually wish they would make them the Sunday "alternate" cap and ditch the current Sunday cap. I've always thought it was a goofy hat, personally.

After all of my rambling: the new uniform is really sharp, and it's a nice way to do an alternate uniform. I bet these things sell like crazy.

Re: New Cardinals alternate uniform

The way I look at it, if you go retro with the uniforms, you have to go the whole 9 yards or it really has little effect of rekindling memories of yesteryear for we fans. Instead of just making it a one day deal, I'd make it an entire weekend promo against our arch rival Chicago cubs. Instead of flying into town, I'd have the cubbies make the short trek to St.Louis via rail.......with strong urgings from Cardinal team officials to request that Redbird fans refrain from egging the cub train as it steamed into town because I don't think fans did that 75 years ago. How about brass spittoons in the team hotel lobbies?  Maybe have the players sign autographs for FREE for the kiddies during the entire weekend like they used to do, instead of making their parents dig deep into the farthest reaches of their wallets so to make the event possible for their little bundles of joy. Speaking of the fans, maybe the Cardinals could offer the adults 3 free beer coupons and the youngsters 3 free snow cone tickets if they show up for the game attired in 1930's garb. Crew cuts for the juvenile males, big top hats like Laurel & Hardy used to sport for the adult males, pig tails for the young girls and maybe those huge peacock hats for the ladies would do the trick? Maybe even give the ladies in attendance those little white paper fans so they can while away the game fluttering the little rascals all about in a vain attempt to keep themselves cool. And smoking in the ballpark would have to be re-instituted for the weekend too so to keep things real. Cigars, pipes and Lucky Strike straights would all be fair game. And ban the wave! Any fans attempting to initiate that ridiculous modern day Wave ritual during the annual Cards-cubs retro weekend would be immediately ejected from the premises. Besides the uniform change, other modifications concerning the players would have to be made as well if we wanted the affair to be realistic. It goes without saying that any players with dreadlocks atop their head would either have to sit the weekend out or get them clipped off. Also, no spitting sunflower seeds in the dugouts. It's either chewing tobacco or nothing. Oh, and maybe the most important thing that modern day ballplayers would have to change.....it would be imperative that they run out ANY and ALL routine grounders and lazy fly balls. These are just a few things off the top of my head that we could do to make it one whale of a weekend. I'm sure others could come up with some real good ideas.

Re: New Cardinals alternate uniform

I strongly prefer the current look of red hats with home white jerseys, and the navy blue hats with the road grays. And the alternate "bird on bat" Sunday home cap is fine as well.

However, if the club had to go to an alternate uniform, which we all knew had to happen at some point because it's all about finding new ways to generate revenue, I'm glad they brought in a historic look rather than just where a red jersey. It is odd that the jersey will read "St. Louis" even though it's worn at home. Traditionally team names are worn on road uni's and nicknames at home.

Since the navy blue hat won't be part of the road uniform, but they want to keep it in some capacity, I'd probably use it for certain days or dates like the way the home Sunday hat is used. Maybe Friday night games can be "navy blue hat" games, regardless of home or road.
