The 40 man roster protects him from the major league portion but there is also a AAA protection roster and a AA protection roster (I dont remember how many can be protected at each level - I want to say 28 but not sure) If he isn't protected on the 40 man roster but is on the AAA roster he can't be chosen in the AAA phase. Of course a player can jump from A+ to the off season AAA roster. He could jump from the DSL to the AAA roster if the team wanted. Not a lot of restrictions in the minor league phases. I believe rthis week (today?) is the day rosters have to be settled and Brian usually gets the roster info pretty quick. A good subsciber perk as I've never seen the AA and AAA protected rosters on any other site.

There's no problem protecting Rule 5 eligible prospects on AAA level as you can place 35 there, and right after the draft you can move them where you expect them to compete. My concern is that Houston, Chicago, Miami, and others do not figure to compete and will be on a prospect hunt. They could easily carry somebody all yr. on the major league level, then option them out in 2014.

His familiarity with the St.Louis organization means he has a few players in mind i am sure. I mean you stick with what you know right?

The only problem with this strategy is that it rarely works out. The prospect basically loses a year of development. It seems that most of them spend a few journeyman years in the majors but that is all they ever accomplish.

I always thought sitting on the bench in St.Louis all year retarded his development. I wonder what ever became of him. He reportedly had an I.Q somewhere in the Einstein range so he is probably working at NASA or something like that.

The word "retarded" should never be used in the same paragraph with the name "Einstein", CardinalNationHouston. Who knows where Barton is? An extremely elevated IQ does not always equate with one working at a place like NASA or the CIA. If his psychy is a bit off, Barton could be picking up aluminium cans as we speak. CNH has inspired a great idea here. I would love to see our crack team of Cardinal Nation reporters treat us to a weekly feature of "Where Are They Now", where we Cardinal fans can learn what our heroes of yesteryear are doing today. Heck we don't even know what superstars like Ozzie Smith and Orlando Cepeda are doing let alone lesser players like John Tudor and John Martin. It would be a huge hit!

Went through all the rule 5 drafts for the last 10 years. 4 position players drafted that remained in the majors (and thus not at least offered to be returned) that hadn't played in at least AA at the time of being drafted. I like the odds of Rodriguez not being drafted and sticking - I wouldn't protect him.

CNH, The Cincinatti Reds supposedly signed Barton to a minor league contract. He played the past two seasons in the (Independent) Atlantic Baseball League for the Bridgeport Bluefish and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. (he hit a combined .348 BA) He will turn 31 next April.
