I'm real surprised that Dickson, Marte, and Browning are still on the 40 man.

I wonder if any of these guys will be attractive to other teams. I figured Hill would be a righthand PH off the bench next year. Anderson is as good as gone. Reifer I don't know. Wondering how much of his trouble this year had to do with his injury?

Say a lot to do with the injury for Reifer velocity down not the same reliever.

i had hoped they'd at least try to trade reifer and/or anderson to another team for lower lesser prospects.

i guess that not possible w/ reifer given arm strength never returned. but i still think anderson has value

Re: Cardinals drop three from 40-man roster

Who do you think will be added?

I scoured the free agent list and Scutaro is probably the only middle infielder that would add value. I'm concerned about Drew's health and he would probably be very expensive. Of course, I expect the Giants will pay high to keep Scutaro.

Affeldt is the best lefty I see and the Giants will probably go high to keep him as well and there is no good reason for him to go to St Louis on a comparable deal.

Others available
Tim Byrdak - Mets 97 and 88 ERA+ the last two years, but cumulative -.1 WAR
Randy Choate - Dodgers
Michael Gonzalez - Nats
J P Howell - Rays
Will Ohman - White Sox
Koji Uehara - Rangers - Not sure he is a FA but on the list. Looks good 36 innings, 20 hits, 3 BB, 43 K's, 1.75 ERA

Unless we get Affeldt or Uehara don't see much to gain.

Looks like trade is the most likely way to upgrade.

Probably will add Fornatero and Siegrist. We can still drop Marte and/or Browning.

Jeremy Affeldt, Sean Burnett or Mike Gonzalez are the only lefties on the market I would want to consider.  Uehara is not a FA.

Darren Oliver's option has been picked up by Toronto so that just leaves Affeldt for me. Burnett could be a sneaky pick up though, he could do well in Cards system. Mike Gonzalez is awful since 2009. He has been injured though so could have a bounce back year. He would be my last option though after Choate and the other two.

Mike Gonzalez isn't awful.  He's better than Randy Choate.

Agree to disagree on Gonzalez? He had promise but has never been the same after leaving Pit. Once a steal in trade he has not been reliable for about 4 years. He would be an interesting come back type player. His 35 or so IP last year is small. And he couldn't break a sheet of glass for 50 feet. I really think you are a few years too lte with this assessment. You know your smack, so what do you see with him? Curious?

He had a 2.98 FIP and a 9.84 K/9 rate in 2012 with the Nats.  He purportedly has a very good slider and a decent low 90s fastball.  With a 10.29 career K rate, he obviously uses those pitches effectively.  Health is the main concern with him so I wouldn't give him a multi-year deal.

Re: Cardinals drop three from 40-man roster

I think McClellan will be non-tendered, we'll add about 4 prospects, and then as we sign a couple free agents we cut Marte, Browning, and Dickson as room is needed.
