6-foot-5 southpaw Kevin Siegrist appeared on BA's AFL hotsheet
Quick writeup and some video on Siegrist per BA. " Kevin Siegrist, lhp, St Louis Cardinals" "Siegrist, 23, was selected by the Cardinals in the 41st round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Palm Beach (Fla.) CC. The 6-foot-5, 190-pound lefthander has had a rather quiet career to date, battling minor injuries while logging 100+ innings in a season just once. After beginning the season on the DL with a right shoulder strain, Siegrist went 7-2, 2.77 this summer with a 6.98 K/9 and 3.18 BB/9 over 87.2 innings (15 starts) between high Class A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield. Siegrist throws cross-body with good deception from a low three-quarters arm slot. He utilizes a three-pitch mix led by a 91-93 mph fastball with excellent run. On Tuesday, he recorded three of his four strikeouts by fastball, also breaking three bats. In addition, Siegrist mixes in a pair of solid offspeed offerings, playing off his low arm slot well. His changeup looks identical to a fastball out of his hand but comes in at 81-83 mph while his 76-78 mph slider adds in extra sweeping action. With a 15-to-2 strikeout rate through 12 innings (4 games, 3 starts) this fall, many scouts believe that Siegrist has all but secured a spot on the Cardinals' 40-man roster." Thanks for posting this. It sure helps.
One of the things that I noticed in the video is that this is a player who lacks maturity, lacks mound presence. It will be fun watching him as he moves through the system.

Siegrist doesn't lack mound presence nor maturity on the mound he throws crossed his body with 3/4 arm slot that's help's his deception and ability to attack both sides of the plate. Just to note Siegrist has pitched in the organization since 2008 how's that lack of mound time just hasn't stayed healthy.

Tough roster decisions coming. I wouldn't assume he will be added to the 40-man.

Its just something I think I'm seeing when I look at the video. If you've seen him multiple times, I'll go with that. I like this guy. I hope he makes it.

Brian Broderick was in a similar situation two years ago. Pitched well in AZ, but wasn't protected and was taken by Washington in the Rule 5. Siegrist may be added. I am just offering a reminder that it should not be assumed.

76-78 seems kinda slow for a slider. Coming from a low 3/4 delivery I can see where it could be devastating, especially coming into a game later on after hitters have been seeing overhand heaters. I'd like to see him pitch. Only 32 innings at AA, is he likely to start out 2013 in Springfield? (With Siegrist and Maness, now we need a knuckle ball guy, preferably a lefty :) )
I wouldn't think he'd be added to the 40 man this winter.

Springfield is most likely in 13 only pitched that small amount of innings due to injuries has sustained that's why Siegrist is in the AFL to catch up on innings missed during regular season.
Can't ignore Siegrist's big 6-foot-5 frame as a southpaw not to mention his low 90s fastball that he works from both sides of the plate and can bust RHH inside with it mixing in a swing miss change up and quality slider that has progressed over the course of the season. Siegrist has the stuff and frame to be 4-5 type starter in a rotation or a dominate LOOGY think that no doubt is protected from the Rule 5 this winter by being added to the 40 man.

He is a mechanical train wreck (which could lead to further injury down the road). It looks as though he projects as a reliever though at the big league level if he can make it there. I'm not overly sold on him as a prospect in comparasion to some of the others we have in the system. But that is my opinion and I am sure it will end up being wrong.

Siegrist's mechanics are not a train wreck. Just throws across his body with some side arm action that helps him have deception in his pitches that can work from both sides of the plate and can bust RHH inside as well. Has the stuff to be a #4-5 type starter really does have very good stuff for a southpaw. Siegrist won't become a reliever until the organization say he is.

He falls way off to the first base side and throwing across his body is also a flaw. His injuries will continue with these very obvious flaws and there are others in his delivery as well. He is a reliever at best and I'm not sure he is worthy of a spot on the 40 man roster at this point.

Go Cards!
