I just saw this on Twitter too. Mark wanted to be closer to home (and his kids). What a bummer for us.

Does Mabry get the gig full time?  Or does Aldrete move into that role?  It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff is filled out for next season.

Re: Mark McGwire to Dodgers

Thanks Mark for your work as Cardinal hitting coach.  I can understand your wanting to be at home during the season with your four young children.  Could it be you waited until your triplets got out of diapers before your made this move!!!

I'm guessing that Mark will make more money with the Dodgers than he did with the Cardinals.  The new Dodger ownership seems to have money to burn!

Mo will now hire a Batting Coach who will make less money than McGwire.  So it is a win-win.  Hopefully, Mo puts the dollars saved into the scouting budget or on signing/
player development side.

Mike Aldrete will likely take over as hitting coach again and could see a hiring of an experienced bench coach to take the place of Aldrete.

You really think McGwire was making a ton of money with us? Compared to the rest of us maybe but I'm guessing he wasn't making more than the MLB player minumum.

Aldrete will be the new hitting coach. I'm guessing we will see 2 ex cards Matheny played with as new coaches in the bullpen and on the bench.

With this news, one must wonder if TLR may be heading to the same location in some capacity?

I did not say that McGwire was making a ton of money with the Cardinals. I just suggested that whatever he was making in STL that he would probably be making more with the cash rich Dodgers.  I doubt we will ever learn what salary figures were involved.

Re: Mark McGwire to Dodgers

Thanks to Mark McGwire for all he has done for the Cardinals, despite the mistakes he made as a player.

I actually have been surprised he has been with us so long. When we made the deal to acquire him in 1997, I was strongly opposed to it. I thought he would finish out the year, then sign with a Southern California team for the '98 season.

I was only off by about 15 years!! biggrin

Why? No one said that when Pettini and McKay left and they were with TLR much longer.

I'll have to check the record books, but I don't believe McKay or Pettini ever whalloped 70 round trippers for TLR in a single season. Nothing bonds(no pun intended) a player and a manager more closely together than when that player puts that home run grin on his managers mug 70 times in a single campaign. You guys watch.....before April 1st, TLR will be joining the Dodgers in some capacity.

We'll hold you to that one, Pugs.

(Remember that reports have McGwire becoming LA's hitting coach, not their owner!)

One major difference is the Dodgers are in a position to compete now and in the future, while the Astro's and Cubs are at least a ways away.  Also, the Dodgers being in CA (although southern CA rather than northern CA) maybe more attractive to TLR, who still calls the CA Bay area home.

That being said, unless the Dodgers' GM (ned colletti) suddenly wins the lottery and quits, i don't see a position with the dodgers that would interest tlr.  and even if colletti where to resign for some reason, i don't know if the dodgers (or any contending team) would see TLR (with no formal front office experiance) as the GM they need.

Yes, there was a TLR-LA rumor before the ownership change, but it did not come to pass. Even if it does later, I do not think Mark McGwire would have anything to do with it.

The Dodgers have been throwing a lot on money around, and probably will keep it up. That puts just about anything on the table.

You're darn right, Bling! TLR will be donning Dodger blue before we know it.
