2012 NL Gold Gloves
The NL Gold Glove finalists have been announced today. Jon Jay did not make the short list in center. The three there are Andrew McCutchen, Michael Bourn and Drew Stubbs. The only Cardinal named a finalist is Yadier Molina. Winners to be announced Tuesday night during a special on ESPN2.
(Edit: Managers and coaches vote for these, not sportswriters.)

I completely disagree. Bourn and Trout are in a class by themselves. The fielding bible would agree: http://www.fieldingbible.com/c...e-votetally.asp

I agree with Pads. Jay showed improvement this year and made some amazing catches. I'm not sure he has the same range as the great ones. He has much room for improvement on balls in front of him.

RE: 2012 NL Gold Gloves
Agree with the above two comments. Jay would be up for the "most exceeded expectations" award, but he's not in the same league as Bourn. That's not a knock on Jay at all, Bourn is that good.
Jay was very good, and I'll be happy to see him in CF for at least a few more years.

Jay needs to get where he makes the plays without getting on the highlights.

This past season seemed to be a banner year for outfielders diving for balls that they didn't have to dive for( not talking about Jay here). I don't know when I've seen so many players looking to take home an Oscar? And what really kills me is the gigantic number of fans who ohhhh and ahhhhh at the sight of them.

He was a dandy at performing the unnecessary dive. CC. There were times when it probabably would have been more fitting for Edmonds to have been clad in a speedo instead of the traditional baseball uni. But of course Jimmy could also make the impossible catch look somewhat mundane. Tell you what, if we fans keep heaping praise on these guys for taking unwarranted dives, its really going to start getting out of hand. Before you know it we'll have 1st basemen stretching for throws and then after snagging the throw, tumbling to the turf and rolling all the way up and over the first base dugout steps.

Barney has the GG in the bag over at 2nd.

Re: 2012 NL Gold Gloves
FWIW, they started last year with the breaking up the OF into LF-CF-RF so as to avoid having three center fielders winning GG's.
Still, it's kind of screwy that someone like Ryan Braun could win a GG while Andrew McCutcheon does not.

Re: 2012 NL Gold Gloves
Funny thing about 2ndbase....... I was listening to the Reds announcers (Welsh and Brennaman) late in the season and they acted like it was an absolute no-brainer that Brandon Phillips was easily the best 2ndbaseman in the league. Barney wasnt anywhere near his caliber. Then a couple of weeks after that the Cubs announcers (Brenly and Kasper) were talking about how great Barney is and that nobody even comes close to him at 2ndbase this year. They had a point, with his error-less game streak. They talked about how he didnt shy away from the tough plays either. So, guys, Phillips or Barney? I go with the stats, dont see how it couldnt be Barney. And by the way, with regards to the earlier post/chart listing the names of baseball people that voted, did you notice Hal Richman's name on the list? Assume everybody knows who Hal Richman is...... Rat

Dates back to the 2006, and 2007 College World Series when his OSU Beavers beat my Tar Heels, and all we heard about from ESPN was Barney and his Famous uncle. Just could not write his name down!!! LOL

Re: 2012 NL Gold Gloves
While Barney definitely does make the routine play all the time, I've heard that his range numbers are skewed due to excessive shifting. Same with Brett Lowrie.

Re: 2012 NL Gold Gloves
Did not realize Barney's collegiate team did that to your Tar Heels, HH. I suddenly dislike him more than ever now. Who is his uncle? I hope Pads is on to something with this shift thing.
