RE: Furcal's elbow?
I believe he is scheduled to start a throwing program in November. Until that happens, no one knows if Furcal can be counted on for next season.

RE: Furcal's elbow?
I'm starting to get sort of a hunch that Furcal, Garcia and their respective medical teams and the Cards org are going to keep fooling around until both guys miss most or all of 2013. They both should be a couple months into recovery by now.

We have 38 year old Carpenter, Waino after an up and down 2012, Westbrook coming off injury, Jaime coming off an injury where he has decided not to go under the knife and a Rookie. My question is where are we getting all of these quality starts from next season? It looks suspect now and even worse if we lose one of our rotation guys. Kelly better be ready to start.

RE: Furcal's elbow?
If the rotation guys stay healthy enough to stay in the rotation we should have a fearsome group of middle relievers. Picture a sixth inning guy who throws 100.

Re: Furcal's elbow?
The Cardinals are in a tough position re Furcal. If he has surgery he is gone for next year and that is the end of his contract. Their only hope to get anything from him is for him to try rehab.
Shoulder surgery is a pretty serious move as there is not nearly as much full recovery as in TJ surgery. I guess it depends on how bad Garcia's shoulder is.

RE: Furcal's elbow?
getting a little off topic from furcal's elbow at times.
@sonnerinnc: position players take 5-6 months to recover from tommy john.
but that why i'm wondering what the deal is. if surgery needed, why not have had it happen sooner.

I think he was hoping in the beginning that it would work itself out and an have an outside chance at playing in the playoffs. Clearly that wasn't going to be the case. You also have to consider while the players contract is owned by the team. It is the players body and the player can do what he pleases. He can see all the specialists he wants but if he doesn't feel comfortable going under the knife then there's nothing we can do but hope we have a plan B in the fold.

RE: Furcal's elbow?
Yeah, sorry this isn't strictly about Furcal but was going to bring up Garcia as a good example of how a team can't force you to get surgery which I think is applicable to Furcal as well.. His case seemed fairly cut and dry to me, which was apparently confirmed by his first and second opinions but then he went to Dr Andrews who said he could rehab it. Of course who am I to doubt Dr Andrews but I've seen the "hurt, rehab, come back, still hurt, rest, still hurt, surgery" carousel too often to not be at least a bit concerned.

#2 - Players (or anyone) would avoid it if possible, ie Pujols
#3 - Sometimes the tendon could just be stretched out or not torn all the way, thus surgery would correct it, but it isn't really ruined just yet.

RE: Furcal's elbow?
IIRC, Furcal opted for a stem cell treatment that is supposed to heal the damage. He doesn't have much time left so this was a long shot that sounded good to him.

Re: Furcal's elbow?
From Furcal in a P-D story: "...Now, I can do everything, except throw hard.”

Re: Furcal's elbow?
if furcal cannot throw, and i'm not saying he can or can't, at this point, it might be time to check in with the rockies.

Re: Furcal's elbow?
it may be a difficult thing for a veteran known for his throwing arm to be moved to a lesser defensive position.

Re: Furcal's elbow?
At this point anything they get from Furcal should be a plus. On the other hand he was terrible the last four months last year and now he is hurt. Cards did next to nothing in the off season to address SS so the outlook this year is bleak at that position unless....
GO CARDS!
