World Series thread - Detroit vs. San Francisco
The Tigers are out in front of Justin Verlander in Game 1 by a 4-0 score in the 4th inning. I still like the Tigers, but less so with Verlander losing. What about you?

I had the game on the radio. Did he really have a substance on his hand or bill?

RE: World Series thread - Detroit vs. San Francisco
I was surprised by this one. I expected Verlander to be dominant, but the Giants rolled on and now have won 4 straight post season games, with none of them being particularly close. Man, what's with Sandoval? Didn't he hit only 12 homers or so during the regular year, and now with the 3 last night has 6 in post season. That would be one of those deals where if you're playing a board or computer stat based game, you'd get all upset with the homers by Sandoval and say "this game sucks - Sandoval hit only 12 homers and he's already got six in just 13 games of my post season replay. Plus he hit two off Verlander, which would never happen in real life".

Now after this start there are a lot more people saying something. I still haven't actually seen any pictures or video myself. Any sports writers saying it or is it just fans talking?

My impression from watching Zito is that for whatever reason, hitters seem to be swinging at a lot of bad pitches from Zito. It does not look like they have sudden movement, but rather I think they are enticing because they are fairly slow, but the location is such that the batter can't do much with them. But only a guy standing in the box would know if they are moving in an unusual way. Isn't it pretty hard to get away with 'doctoring' a ball these days? Wouldn't there be innings where the opposing pitcher would take the mound using the same ball that Zito just threw to get the final out of the inning? Needless to say I'm skeptical about the whole substance-on-the-ball bit at this point.

Re: World Series thread - Detroit vs. San Francisco
This series is over. The minute after we lost to the Giants I said there is no way any team is beating these guys right now, they are way too hot and everything is going their way right now. They are getting every break, they are hitting everything and their pitchers are just dominating. I'd be shocked if the series went 6, I think Giants take it in 5.

Maybe you will be proven right, however the series is going to Detroit now, I don't think it is over, the Tigers were almost dead in september, they finally catch the White Sox in the final week.

Re: World Series thread - Detroit vs. San Francisco
Having taken care of business at home, what a great feeling for the Giants of knowing that if they take just one of these 3 games in Detroit, then it's over. Of course their mindset is that of wanting to polish this series off in Michigan. Even if Detroit spanks them 3 straight games in The Motor City, you'd still have to favor SF win the series by taking the last two games on their home turf. Detroit is in serious trouble......Golly that should be us and not Frisco playing in this series!!

Re: World Series thread - Detroit vs. San Francisco
this is the first WS in a while where I can honestly say I dont care who wins...that being said Id like to see some decent baseball... I felt bad for detroit until they began booing their team down 2-0 in a two run game .. local sportswriters can get on the "best fans in baseball" (unfairly imo) for not being the loudest, but at least we dont pull stuff like that. Another request would be to stop showing brian wilson in the dugout, in fact he would be the only reason im rooting for detroit...

At least the Hot Stove league can get started a little earlier this year... like in about 11 hours.

top of the tenth, runner on second, 2 outs, in a tie game 4 elimination game in the world series.... shot to center you come in half way...and then decide to pull up? I have no dog in this fight, but my god....if that thing is within 15 feet of you you dive for it in this situation no matter what. I cant believe buck and mccarver didnt bring this up...ugh...what a terrible series

Rat --------------------------------------------- I beg to differ with you, Rat.....(please please)! There is no way to tell how Detroit would have fared against another WS foe? Maybe if our Cards would have been the NL representative, Waino trots out there in Game 1 and gets shelled by the likes of Prince and this year's Triple Crown winner and then it's a whole different series. Besides, as much as I love our Redbirds, I don't know if they are capable of dominating, let alone sweeping a team in post season play.....no we cannot count our one game series sweep against Atlanta. It really looked for awhile like our boys were finally going to drill a post season opponent, until they blew their royal opportunity to do so against the new World Champions in Game 5 at home.

Re: World Series thread - Detroit vs. San Francisco
Congratulations to the San Francisco Giants for their second title in three years. Also, if I am counting it up correct, this was their 20th pennant since 1901.
We're at 18 of course, but jump to 22 if you count back to the true origins of the modern Cardinal team, which go directly to the 1882 St. Louis Browns of the American Association. They won four straight AA pennants in the 1880s (1885-1888).
The Giants tie us though, as they get 2 more from the 1800s, winning NL pennants in 1888 and 1889. In fact, in 1888 the Browns won the AA pennant and the Giants the NL pennant, with the Giants beating the Browns for the championship.
Somewhat ironically, looking at this 2012 finish, the Detroit Wolverines were the 1887 NL champs, beating the Browns for the championship in that year.
But the Browns beat the Chicago White Stockings for the 1886 chempionship and those same two teams tied for the '85 prize (they only played six games, each winning three).
So you could really say we already have our 12th championship, and actually have 12 1/2.
