Matt Carpenter to 2b full time?

Matt Carpenter to 2b full time?

i'd love for this to happen. apparently his off season will be on focusing on that position.

what are your thoughts on it actually working out?

if it could work:
- might mean the position solved for the future
- could be a stop gap until wong ready at least

i just remember a quote by him where he mentioned the organization has asked him to focus on learning fielding there in the off season.

think it happened around one of the times he got a start there this yr.

Not sure; but that has a familiar ring with me too.  Given that he appeared at 2b twice this year, I don't see it as a reach.

Considering Holliday's contract, JJ's improvement in CF, and the ascendance of Matt Adams + Oscar Taveras, that may be where his AB's lie, in this organization.

If Carpenter ever reaches 100 games at 2B, he would be the tallest player at the position in team history at 6-foot-3. Tyler Greene is currently tops at 6-foot-2.

Only 14 second basemen in MLB history (100 games minimum) have been as tall as Carpenter.

Details here.

I guess that rules him out as a second baseman.

Maybe he has long arms.

Seriously, I hope we go for a natural 2Bman with range rather than converting a guy because we like his bat.  Defense up the middle is key.

Matt has shown good range at 3B, but that may not convert to 2B. The only way to find out is to play him there in ST. It isn't a big reach as he is an infielder.

Yeo! We can find a spot for him, things usually work out that way.
No negative waves man!

Re: Matt Carpenter to 2b full time?

It is a big reach, in the sense that moving to second base from third represents what Bill James called a leftward shift in the defensive spectrum.  I'll have to dig out the old article from the Abstracts, but he felt that you rarely saw a man move leftward on the defensive spectrum (i.e., left field to center field or second base to shortstop - Tony Womack on the 2001 D'backs was a rare exception).  Guys moving to the right side (LF to 1B, 2B to 3B, SS to 3B) are much more common.

Put it another way - we saw Ken Oberkfell successfully move from 2B to 3B in 1981; I doubt we could see Ken Reitz move from 3B to 2B in the 1970's, any more than putting Allen Craig at 2B was ever anything more than an experiment.

More likely, if the Cards feel a move if necessary to bolster the middle infield, we'll either pick up a real second baseman or, alternatively, deal for a shortstop and move Furcal to 2B to minimize further damage to his arm.

Go figure:

"I told him to make it a focus," Matheny said of instructing Carpenter to work this winter at second base, a new position for the lefthanded-hitting utility fielder.

"And go see what he can do with it and be ready to (come to spring training) as a ballplayer. I want him to have some repetition out there."

Anyone else especially excited for spring training? It's going to be a fascinating offseason given that a lot of the decisions may have to do with current players instead of acquisitions. There is a lot of intrigue with this roster.

While Matheny is encouraging him to focus on the position, I get the impression the particulars are left up to him (M. Carpenter).  IMO, if they were going to give him a legit shot at the position, they'd have some sort of schedule or provisions for him, such as having him report to Jupiter at a specific time or assigning him to a winter ball team.

I read somewhere that Schumaker wouldn't be coming back meaning that Descalso and Kozma only players that can be everyday 2nd baseman meaning I believe that M Carp will be fighting for the 2nd base job. It'll give more time to Wong to mature in the minors as well.

Personally, I've had enough of utility type guys playing middle infield positions. Get or promote a real second baseman. O over D at middle infield is a bad idea.

Re: Matt Carpenter to 2b full time?

I think this whole "learn how to play 2B" bit is just something to make Carpenter a little more versatile and valuable as a utility player, not to give him a shot at being the full-time guy there, or even a platoon 2Bman.
