Re: What are your thoughts on the season?...

Poor decisions in the offseason caused a slow start.
Quentin getting on the field and a couple call ups turned things around big time.
Headley became the best Padre prospect since TG almost overnight.
Hopefully the change Maybin made is repeatable going forward,if so,we have our lead off hitter for the next 3 years.
If we can get the starters healthy I see 85 wins next year.

Re: What are your thoughts on the season?...

Injuries devastated our pitching staff, shutting down our #2 (Luebke) #3 (Stauffer) and #5 (Mosely) pitchers.  Richard and Volquez pitched well at times and Richard pitched much better than I expected.  I was ready to trade him away for whatever we could get.  He ate innings and pitched fairly well.  We all know the story on Volquez, so I won't go there.  Kelly has potential, but he's not there yet.  He has very solid stuff from what I saw, so I think he'll be right there vying for a spot in SP.

The scrapheap players did their parts and, while most were not very good, there were some bright spots at times, the brightest being Stults.  The Cashner project has gotten off to a rocky start.  Electric stuff, but he has to be able to control it with consistency.  I wasn't happy about the trade of Frieri but I still like Amarista.  I have forgotten who else we got in that trade.

Offensively, Headley was incredible.  To lead the NL in RBI's is signficant.  To do it in a homepark called Petco, is extraordinary.  He ended up with a 6.0 war, which is tied for 7th all-time in Padre history.  His 115 RBI's were tied for 5th all-time!

Everth Cabrera led the NL in stolen bases and played, at times, an incredible shortstop.  Hitting?  Not so much.  Maybin had a very nice 2nd half of the season and proved defensively why we locked him up.  It takes a special kind of player to play CF in Petco.  The growing pains were noticeable but that is expected.  Alonso didn't hit as high as I expected but wasn't awful.  He hit a LOT of doubles, which is what was advertised.  Grandal has star written all over him and had a very impressive start due to the inability of Hundley to do anything right offensively.  Venorfia were good.  Not great, but good.  Quentin was productive when he was healthy, which was about as expected, and as often.  Forsythe sparkled at times too.

The bullpen held it all together.  Street & Gregorson were the anchors and Thayer filled in nicely for a short while.  I liked the emergence of Tom Layne and thought he was very effective in the short while he was here.  The rest of the bully was ho-hum, imo.  I just looked and saw how well Nick Vincent did. Very impressive!

Manager/Coaching staff = A+  I seriously can't believe how they held this group together and made them competitive.  Hats off to a terrific staff and a terrific, under appreciated manager in Bud Black.

As I mentioned before, I am really looking forward to seeing what the off season will bring to our Padres.  The future looks bright!

Go Padres!!!

Donn Roach is the other guy we got in the Frieri trade.  He had pretty great results down in the minors (Lake Elsinore and San Antonio).  Tons of ground balls.  Very nice ERA, WHIP, and K/BB ratio.

How did you research the all-time WAR numbers in Padres history, out of curiosity?  I'd love to find the site with that info.

RE: What are your thoughts on the season?...

In addition to a lot of what has been stated above, one takeaway from the season is that I have a good feeling about our bullpen going forward.

I like Thayer-Gregerson-Street as our 7-8-9. Young guys like Brach, Vincent, and Boxberger look to be promising. I'd love for us to find a LHP (or two) with an electric arm, but Layne performed well. I just worry that he'll get "figured out" like Josh Spence did. Bass as our long man of the future could be solid, as well.

Here's Eddy Rodriguez's Blog.
Pretty cool read about getting called up so unexpectedly and his first hit....a Homer!

Very Suprising!
Suprised and very disappointed to their start. It looked like the hitting was has bad as ever ( that is saying something ).rolleyes
So many new young good looking pitchers being given the chance to show their stuff excitedand all shelved with injuries.disbelief
Suprised Headley was NOT traded...and even more suprised at his output after that. WOW 189167_woot.gif
Most suprised by how well they played ( with such a limited offensive punch ) the last 2 months.
Not sure what to expect next year. Both good and bad happened and whats to say both will not happen again.

My thoughts on the entire season I guess are that considering the volume and types of injuries at virtually every level, for them to become one of the best teams in all of baseball from July on is just impressive...

Really bodes well for the future, and that it might start sooner than later......

Re: What are your thoughts on the season?...

I was surprised at many things, both good and bad.

Surprised at how awful the team was to start the season, on both sides of the ball.  Injuries can be overcome with depth, but when you're out there giving up 2-4 errors (or more) per game, that's very difficult to come back from.  I'm very glad this was eventually fixed over the course of the season, but it was just awful to watch them at the beginning.

Surprised at how many injuries there actually were, and how it's going to have a ripple effect going into 2013...especially with the pitching staff.  These things happen, but seeing one guy after another go to the DL with such catastrophic injuries was very surprising.

Surprised at how good Headley became.  He's putting himself out there as a very strong player and I'm really looking forward to seeing how he continues to build on this for the next couple of seasons.  He's definitely made the front office's decision making process difficult.

Surprised at how lackluster some of the prospects minor league performances were, overall.  Obviously this gets back to injuries in some respect, and there were some bright spots, but we didn't see much growth from guys (like Keyvius Sampson) and others regressed pretty dramatically (namely, Decker and Tekotte).  I thought we'd have better performances from some of these "top 10" guys.

Lastly, I was kinda surprised at how well the process of selling the team went.  I guess after the Moorad debacle, I was expecting more problems from MLB, but glad that it went relatively smoothly.

I would agree with was said above but would add that I was surprised how fast the new owners moved on changing the dimensions of the ballpark.  I like the decisiveness and may give a hint on how the new group will operate.  Happy Holidays to everyone on the board 141847_cheers.GIF
