The Padres are 13-8 overall, 7-2 at home, and lost only 1 of the 7 series since the AS break. The Rockies on the other hand are 6-16 and 2-11 on the road since the AS break. The Padres are back to 8 games under .500 since July 4th and are currently 11 1/2 games back of the Dodgers, who are 4 1/2 ahead of the 2nd place Giants. I like the Padres chance of winning this series and possibly a sweep. Following this series at home, the Padres go to St. Louis for a 4-game set.

The Rockies are banged up having lost key players and have a pitching staff that is a mess. Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez, Cuddyer, and Brett Anderson, the only starting pitcher with less than a 3.72 ERA (even though he had 8 starts and 43.1 IP), are all on the DL.

The Padres Cabrera is having hamstring problems again. I don't think he would be a big loss if he were to land on the DL again. Amarista has shown he is just as good defensively and is no worse offensively than Cabrera.

The Dodgers will be facing a couple of tough teams in the Braves for a 4-game set and then the Brewers. At least two of those games will feature newly acquired Kevin Corriea, good for the Padres, and the Braves will miss Kershaw. I like the Padres chances of significantly gaining on the Dodgers. Then again maybe not. But I can hope.

GO PADRES!

7.5 games back right now. Who knows, maybe Rymer comes in and gives us a shot in the arm and we make a nice little run at things.

Agree, but at least they're trying.  Does anyone else not miss Chase Headley even the smallest little bit.... perhaps also helping team performance by their absence:  Quentin & Maybin?   Just sayin'!

So far Solarte is making that trade look good for us. in more ways than one.

It looks like this team has fire now. They're winning series against good teams.

Quentin and Maybin...Do we have to talk about them?

Who? I would follow up with a moving (or DFA) Quentin before ST … just a non-productive distraction at this point wasting a roster spot (when not on the DL) and, if at all possible, get a deal for Maybin … sort of the same logic. Addition by subtraction.

FENN68:  Stults has been effective (maybe boosting is trade value) while Despaigne has not performed all that well and we may be blinded by the "fun style and story" plus the focus on moving Stults. There was a reason the Padres were able to sign Despaigne so cheaply as a FA even though other teams were trying him out … maybe we are seeing the real potential. When Cashner returns … maybe it is Despaigne that gets optioned.
I hope it is Despaigne and not Hahn.

Rymer Liriano has been called up and Jeff Francoeur has been DFA. Francouer was a disappointment.

Going to be taking my family to the game tonight. Any tips for helping my kids to get autographs? What time do the gates open?

Yes I do. Get there early. The gates open usually and hour and a half before gametime on weekday games and 2 hours on weekends. Get right down to the front row at the end of the Pad dugout closest to the RF foul pole. Have your kids dressed in Pad gear with Sharpies in hand. Have them ask for autographs by saying Mr. _______ and please. They will get all they want. Have your balls and baseball cards ready to sign and dont forget your Sharpie. It will help if you are close by to establish eye contact and maybe throw in a "hey Mr.Cabrera, may we get your autograph"   Depending on how old they are, you might also want to get there early and have them take their gloves and hang in LF for BP. They can get balls o plenty. My kids are now 22 and 20 and I will never forget those days...

Game 1 lineup:

1. Venable, CF
2. Solarte, 3B
3. Smith, LF
4. Alonso, 1B
5. Gyorko, 2B
6. Grandal, C
7. Liriano, RF
8. Amarista, SS
9. Hahn

Liriano is here. Francoeur, who was a disappointment, is gone.

Note Liriano is in RF (Venable is the CF) …few think Liriano can be the CF in PETCO even though he has worked there in the minors this year. Is this the start of the 2015 future Smith - Venable - Liriano?

You need a ballpoint pen if you are getting a ball signed.
NO sharpie on a baseball!

Re: Colorado Rockies @ San Diego Padres (August 11 - 13)

This is a bit dated, but last year I remember talking to a few Padre people who said they like Liriano more in RF because he has arguably the strongest most accurate arm in the system.  He could play CF and not miss a step

Renfroe on the other hand is NOT a CF.  He has a strong arm and can stay in RF or move to left, but definitely not a CF unless its emergency.

Yes ballpoint on a ball.

Reminds me of one of my many life regrets:  had a 1977 All Star Game commemorative ball signed by Rollie Fingers and Vida Blue with ball points.  Each was a drop the ball to them before a (regular season) game and sign.  Stupid kid (me) needed a baseball and played catch with it, thus ruining the ball.  UGH!

Agreed. ^

BTW, my kids got Cashner (2014 Topps card), Medica (on our program), Venable (2014 Topps card), and Gyorko (2014 Topps card). Just missed Rymer. :(

Liriano looks like a linebacker. Kid is huge.
