The Padres are coming into this series tied with Dodgers with the best NL West record (11-7) since the AS beak as of Wednesday, and have won 6 of their last 8 games. The Last time they faced the Pirates, they were owned in part due to a collapsed pen after a 2.2 IP start by Stauffer in game 1 and a bad MLB debut by Hahn in game 2. Kennedy held on to salvage the win to prevent a sweep.

This time we have Ross in this series along with Kennedy again. Then there is Stults, who still concerns me despite his solid outing against the Braves last weekend. Pirates will have tough pitching in this series, but fortunately for the Padres, they will be without one of their best hitters, who has a rib fracture, but not on the DL at this time. Amarista has continued to surprise me in the OF. I hope he keeps it up.

GO PADRES!

I like BB as a coach but can we get someone else to do the lineup, an offensive coordinator

Typical of the Padres.

Bases-loaded with no one out and then a DP and a first pitch pop-up. They couldn't muster up one single run.

This offense is pathetic,

Heartless performance.  The complete opposite of yesterdays game.  This is what A.J. will have to fix before next season.

What I don't get, is the Pirates pitcher walked the last guy on four straight pitches and then Gyorko swings immediately at the first pitch offered to him.  Then the next guy swings at the first pitch and we are out of the inning with nothing to show for it.  No outs, bases loaded should be at least one run.  Sick.

*I was wrong about the four straight pitches, that was in the Diamondbacks game I was also watching.  Smith walked on seven pitches.*

Glad to see this game was painful for you guys too

I just never understand swinging at the first pitch.  Tony would always say that the first pitch of the AB he would look for a pitch in a very specific area (ie fastball, out third around the knees) IF and only IF it was there he would swing. It could have been right down the middle and if he was expecting somewhere else he wouldnt swing.

I feel like most of the Padres swing whenever they see a strike.  It doesnt matter if they put a good swing on it or not.  They just see ball, try to hit ball, and routinely roll over to an infielder

You would think the hittng coaches would at least try to implement
this strategy?
At least with some guys.
May not work with everyone.
Some guys may not hit well when behind in count in other words.

What was Nelson thinking trying to run to second on a routine fly out to RF?

Gyorko swinging at ball four to lead off the 7th.
You would think after three times through they would at least "try" to lay off the pitches below the knees......wouldn't you?
But nope.....every one of them flailing at balls in the dirt!
How about making him bring pitches up by letting those go?

Say what you will about Grandall but at least he can read pitches and lay off ones out of the zone.
He doesn't just decide to swing before the ball is out of the pitchers hand like many do.

Another grata outing by Stults!
Another start or two like that and.......
Any chance he still gets traded?

Re: San Diego Padres @ Pittsburgh Pirates (August 8 - 10)

Stults was solids. If he continues to pitch well to season's end, his trade value will go up.

The Padres offense continues to struggle. Twice they had bases loaded with no outs. The first time Nelson's base-running boneheaded blunder in the 1st ended what could have been a bigger inning. The second time they couldn't get score one single run.

Medica is alright after being drilled in the back of his helmet. Without it, he assuredly would have at least a very serious injury.  Thank goodness for the helmet. It saved his life,

There's nothing quite like sitting through 9 innings to see the Padres amass four hits.

Again.

Just got back from the Angel game where the red sox got 6 hits in 19 innings.  Weird that in both games the only runs were scored in the first inning.  The exact opposite both nights.

Is Gyorko the next Dan Uggla? Can't wait to see the commentary when the Padres' have to pay him $6MM (2017), $9MM (2018), and $13MM (2019) and can't dump him on anyone. Looking at 5 more years of Gyorko under the contract he signed with Byrnes. Don't know what Byrnes was think giving him the 3rd largest contract in history for a player completing one ML season when he didn't need to. However, the contract is consistent with Byrnes lack of money management / risk (player) evaluation at the ML level (Gyorko, Quentin, Maybin, Hundley, Luebke … and maybe even Venable … should add in Johnson). None should be considered beneficial contracts to the Padres … still looking for the bigger deals that would be good deals for the Padres. So far, 0-fer.

Note: Gyorko can't hit (but swings at) the high inside FB as well as the low ball. Well he has 5 more years to learn how to hit … oh wait, didn't they say he is a natural hitter … so maybe nothing else to learn?

Re: San Diego Padres @ Pittsburgh Pirates (August 8 - 10)

Cabrera
Solarte
Smith
ALonso
Venable
Gyorko
Ninja
Rivera
Ross

Anyone else have an issue with Ninja in LF?  LF is supposed to be your big bopper that cant play much D... isnt that the exact opposite of Amarista?  Bring back Goebbert or start Medica (if he doesnt have a concussion) more often
