Reasons To Be Excited

The trade deadline is past. The Chase dilemma is behind us. A new GM is on the way. And I'm sitting here wondering what reasons we really have to look forward to with Padres baseball. I see one. Then I have to get creative.

The infield is a big question mark. The outfield is an even bigger question mark. We still have little power and only one guy who hits with any consistency. I don't believe in hoping players will rebound. We did that this year. Our acclaimed farm system isn't doing much for the big league lineup. And our promising prospects still seem like just a glimmer of hope in the distant future.

I'll admit, I don't follow the minors like the rest of you. But I do follow the talk, and the talk usually always outperforms the reality. And that new GM we're all waiting on, well, Hoyer and Byrnes offered hope but still floundered. With that said, here are my current reasons to be excited.

1) The Rotation
Ross, Kennedy, Hahn, and "O" have all been fun to watch. Even if they don't maintain their domination, they should be solid. And if Cashner can get healthy, hoo-doggies, look out.

2) Uniformity
As long as the Padres continue to lose, there will be talk of returning to the color most equate with the level of typical Padre performance. Who can get tired of that?

3) The Beer Thread
Sure, it's buried way down below. But that can change.

Please, somebody restore my optimism. Give me some reasons for hope based on probability, and not desperation.

Well, they are averaging just over 27,000 in home attendance. So I guess that means they won't be leaving town any time soon. So maybe in 20 more years they'll have figured something out.

It may not be a too-distant future.
Liriano is playing well at AAA.
Spangenberg and Renfroe are playing well at AA.
Alex Dickerson is absolutely killing it (SSS) in AA, and he's been highly-touted since he came out of college.  (He won the Big 10 Triple Crown as a sophomore, and has never hit below an .800 OPS at any level of pro ball.)

Those guys are not far off.  They obviously might flame out, but it's at least a reason for hope.
Solarte has been a nice surprise, too (so far...).

Check out the names I just posted in the Farm Thread that are all at Low A or lower.
Some bats to be excited about IMO.
Yes...they are far away.....but it's still optimism!!!

The Beer thread has life !  I like that one.  Much better than talking about the team's offensive woes or current borin uniforms
This Team makes me Drink !

Re: Reasons To Be Excited

We still don't have a "Core Four"! But, I believe that we are not far from having them. For me at this point in time

We could go with:

Gyorko
Grandal
Liriano
Medica

I think Spangenburg and Rondon are not far off.

My Great 8 would be

Gyorko
Grandal
Liriano
Medica
Spangenburg
Rondon/Peterson
Ascencio
Renfroe

Why Grandal, out of curiosity?
I've been pretty disappointed in his production ever since the suspension.
His K rate this year is much higher than it's ever been (a very high 27.0% this year, as opposed to 17.3% and 16.7% in 2012 and 2013), which is concerning.

Given Hedges' defensive reputation, and his youth (i.e., plenty of time to develop with the bat), I think I'd put him in my "Great Eight" for the future, even though he hasn't done much with the bat yet.

Hedges will be a major league Catcher because of his defense....but there's just as much chance that Grandal hits better than he has so far this year than there is that Hedges hits well enough to stay in the majors.
I just don't get how, considering almost every Padre has slumped with the bat this year, that we are writing off Alonso and Grandal at this point?
Personally I think our Catching combo will be Hedges/Grandal.
Unless Grandal ends up at 1B.
But,we have many other 1B options so that does not seem likely.

Well....IMO, Grandal's strength has always been his hitting.  True, his numbers aren't ideally where he would want them to be at this point, but he is progressing.  He is an average to above average catcher.  He frames fairly well too, not as well as Rivera, but good enough.    I agree that Hedges is a superior catcher on the defensive side.  The Padres need bats....period.  I believe they will play the hot hand every chance they get.  Until Hedges developes a better hitting line, I believe that Grandal is worthy of my, "Great 8".

Re: Reasons To Be Excited

I would rather us carry 3 catchers again, or have it be Rivera and Hedges. I want to see hedges work under Rivera for a season. Then trade Rivera. All of his homers are away, and with his defense, one of the small park teams could be very interested. I would be interested to see Grandal work hard this off season to become a solid first basemen

Reguarding to the rotation, I think its best to trade Cashner, I would rather not have someone with his injury history in the rotation, but more importantly getting paid a lot. I would also like to see Kennedy Traded at the winter meetings, at least him. Ross-Hahn-Despaigne. After that i would love to see Joe pitching with Tyson, and just so many options past that.

That guy needs to spend his whole off-season in the batting cage remembering how to hit, I'd say.

Re: Reasons To Be Excited

Wow, did anyone notice that the Padres have the highest post all star team batting avg. and OPS in the NL?  That's notable I think.  Best team ERA as well.  And yes it has translated into wins: An .611 winning percentage.

This is a much more entertaining team to watch now; the future can wait.

Roids would help.

Re: Reasons To Be Excited

Suddenly the boys are 7.5 games out of the wild card with a three game set against the rox before a crucial stretch to see what these boys are really made of as they finish the month against the dodgers twice, the brewers, cardinals and dbacks. Could THIS team put that best AVG and ERA since the break to more work and pull some magic out of this season after a lethargic first half? Not going to hold my breath but something to root for finally

Re: Reasons To Be Excited

Solarte is beginning to get me excited. He seems to be doing everything right. At least offensively. I haven't watched all his games so I'm not sure about his fielding.

But check out these numbers as a Padre...
