I hope the Padres do better this time around. Last weekend, they lost 3 of 4 to the Braves, when their pitching was good enough to win 3 of 4. The Padres won the first game. They lost the second due to not just lack of offense, but botched fundamental defense that allowed 4 runs to score. The third was bad pitching by Stults, who will again face Minor. The fourth was simply lack of offense and no run support, as usual, for Lane's solid performance. Maybe the Padres pitcher friendly stadium will be an advantage, even if only slightly.

GO PADRES!

Stults may be 3-13 but his era isn't any good.
Why do we keep running him out there?
I'd rather see Wisler......or Oramas......or Needy.....or,well,anyone else.

Yeah, let's see what we have with some of our young guys.
We know what we have with Stults, which is (a) not good, and (b) at his age, never getting better.
As with CQ, time to cut bait and move on.

Game 1 lineup:

1. Cabrera, SS
2. Solarte, LF
3. Gyorko, 2B
4. Medica, 1B
5. Rivera, C
6. Nelson, 3B
7. Francoeur, RF
8. Almonte, CF
9. Stults, P

Almonte is a downgrade from Deno. What was the FO thinking?

Almonte (age 25): 106 AB, .198 AVG, .248 OBP, .292 SLG, .540 OPS
Denorfia (age 34): 248 AB, .242 AVG, .293 OBP, .319 SLG, .612 OPS

They were thinking...
A.Almonte is only 25 and could still improve.....and
2. Denorfia would not be a Padre after this season so get something for him if you can.

Looking at the numbers you posted, with only just over 100 AB's,one good week and his numbers would be better than Denorfias.
They may have been thinking that too.

Re: Atlanta Braves @ San Diego Padres (August 1 - 3)

My guess is that the RP (Kohlsceen or something?) will end up being the key piece to that trade.
Like Mr. P said, I think the FO did a nice job getting something for someone who we otherwise would have gotten nothing for.
The RP is a young, controllable piece who can potentially contribute as a member of the 'pen for years to come.
Just that alone is decent value for Deno.
If Almonte contributes at all, that's a bonus if you ask me.

Looking at that lin up I'd have never guessed we'd score 9 runs tonight. Medica might be our next Jesus Guzman. And Everth is showing signs of not sucking. About time!

Re: Atlanta Braves @ San Diego Padres (August 1 - 3)

A season high 20 hits.
Medica goes 5 for 5, 2 HR and 4 RBI  and brings his average up from .248 to .273.
Almonte was not good at the plate, but he sure was very fast on the bases and in the OF.

Stults actually pitched well and winning a game with him on the mound is huge. It means that with Kennedy and Ross on the mound the next two days gives the Padres an a good chance of winning at least one more taking the series.

GO PADRES!

Same old Padres every year.   Wait until August to start hitting.

If they are going to suck, they need to suck the whole year so they can get a top 5 draft pick

Great to see Gyorko swinging the bat well.  This is a lost season for him, but it would be great if he could end it on a high note.

Nice at bat Yonder.
At least Bud has Medica in the lineup.

Re: Atlanta Braves @ San Diego Padres (August 1 - 3)

The Padres beat Santana and the Braves in 12.

Despite giving up 5 walks, Kennedy pitch well allowing only 1 run on 2 hits.
Medica is still hot going 2 for 4. What would Black take out the Padres hottest hitter in this series.
Quack makes me nervous.

The Padres have a good chance to sweep with Ross on the mound tomorrow.

Let's get out the brooms!

GO PADRES!

In July, Tyson Ross has a 1.10 ERA and has allowed only 1 ER in 3 home games (23 IP, 0.39 ERA). This season he has a 1.86 ERA at home.

It has to be noticed my even the most causal of fans that the energy and enthusiasm shift from when Headley packed his bags and Solarte arrived here.  I know Chase had a naging injury and wasn't 100% but it got to be depressing to watch him.  This bunch might not be the most talented but they are intense and having fun.

I know I an having more fun!  GO PADRES!!

I have heard Black and some of the pre / post game ex-players speak to the energy that the new players bring … not saying anything against Headley … but the insertion of new faces with something to show at the ML level lifts the emotions of everyone … of course that is tied to playing a lot better over the past month.

I guess the caution is that this is a short term pump … if they start losing again the wind may come back out of the sails. With Headley, all the players "knew" the outcome and were just waiting … his trade just took a issue off the table which always helps. However, a move just for a move sometimes does not work … apparently in StL the move of Craig / Kelly for Lackey his not sitting well with the team (they like both and did not expect the deal) … every situation is different. On the other side the not trading Kennedy / Benoit may have added to the enthusiasm … again removing an issue in their minds and, to a degree, suggesting that the Padres' FO is not "giving up" for 2014-15.

The new faces surely help … the resolving of open issues does too.

As good as Tyson has been, from talking to multiple scouts they seem to agree that Joe is better.

So if Tyson is putting up these type of numbers.... :)
