Post Trade-Deadline Look at 2015

Post Trade-Deadline Look at 2015

So, knowing what we now know about our roster going forward, is it safe to say that the 2015 Padres (position players) look like this?

C: Rivera/Grandal
1B: Alonso/Medica
2B: Solarte
SS: Cabrera
3B: Gyorko
LF: Smith/Medica (I have no faith that Quentin will contribute)
CF: Maybin
RF: Venable

Utility IF: Amarista (or Ryan Jackson, or Taylor Lindsey)
Utility OF: Almonte (or Goebbert, or Liriano)

Do you have any faith that Maybin or Venable will contribute?  IMO we need 2 new starting outfielders.  (For the 10th season in a row)

I can live with that infield.  Alonso gets one more chance next season (on a short leash).  Solarte at 2nd?  We better have a backup plan.

My comment about Q was about his health preventing him from playing.
Not a concern with Venable.
Maybin... who knows?  If the new GM finds a way to move him, that would be fine with me.

Agree with the short leash.
We need an upgrade at 1B.

Re: Post Trade-Deadline Look at 2015

I'm not so sure that Gyorko doesn't just stay at 2B and Solarte play 3B.
I haven't seen any indication that they plan to move him.
Also,I think Liriano will get a shot at RF in ST.
Agree on Alonso.
I think the job is still his(personally I think he'll keep it) but he doesn't deserve any more than a short leash at this point.
One of the many 1B/LF youngsters we have could steal the job however if they tear it up the rest of this year and in ST next year.

Sounds about right for me … the bench being Medica / Goebbert (L) covering 1B/LF and Almonte (#) the "as needed" 5th OF. Amarista (L) gets the INF reserve for all the positions. After that there should be a number of 40 man roster types on speed dial from El Paso. Should have a Spangenberg / Peterson / Lindsey INF in EP and all on the 40 man … in the OF Liriano / Dickerson / Fuentes / Asencio and all on the 40 man roster. About half way through the season we could see some real changes.

Should think Quentin just gets released along with Francoeur, Nelson, Conrad, and Jackson.

SP is shaping up as Ross / Cashner / Kennedy / Hahn / Despaigne with Erlin or Stults in the swing mode. Would force Wisler to start in AAA along with the walking wounded in Kelly, Wieland, Luebke (maybe), and Needy getting promoted to AAA. Again on speed dial for a ML call - up.

Doubt the new GM goes overboard this winter in engineering deals … still has a lot to learn about the Padre players and farm system. I would guess the 2015 trade deadline will be when the  new GM gets going (Kennedy, Benoit, Venable are the obvious choice due to age, pending FA). Keep in mind that the new owners took one year to dump Garfinkel and hire Dee … Dee took one year to dump Byrnes and hire the new GM … so I would not be surprised that  it would take one year for the new GM to position himself to start making major moves (next trade deadline). Actually may need some time for some of the "marginal" players to build some value and to figure out which ones will improve and which ones just remain down. If we see anything, maybe some strategic FA signings … thinking OF more than anything else … and likely on 1 year deals.

I sure hope so.
No need to have him clogging up a roster spot just because the previous GM signed him through next year.
He can no longer contribute.
Time to move on.

Not to mention he is an abrasive A-Hole, who is a malignant cancer on a roster of young players.

That's why we need depth at SP. IMO we don't have much real depth at starttng pitcher. They're all either hurting or rehabbing. Our best starting pitchers in the minors are in grave doubt for 2015.

Don't count out Asencio for the outfield!
Best arm in the system and really starting to show with the bat!

Only thing missing in your analysis is which pitchers will need TJ surgery this offseason and how that will impact a "great on paper" pitching staff...

Re: Post Trade-Deadline Look at 2015

Agreed that Quentin gets released. That was a lousy deal from day 1. Time to cut your losses. Same for Maybin. This kid just isn't good (or smart) enough.
I don't see why anyone thinks Alonso deserves anything more than his outright release. He can't stay healthy but when he does make the odd appearance, he has no power, no speed, and his defense isn' t good enough to make us forget about his lousy offense. Time today to give Medica the 1st base job and open up a spot on the 40 man.

As for pitching, don't be surprised to see Benoit and his big $'s shifted. That money can be better spent elsewhere and we never seem to be short of quality relievers.

It's fine if you want to move on from Alonso, but Medica isn't any better.

I was surprised no contending team offered us enough for Benoit. Thought he was gone for sure.

Do other teams covet Maybin? Man, if they do it's time to grant their wishes! Make it a Christmas present by saying "here, you can have him. We don't want anything in return...including his contract!"
