Maybin banged for 25 games (amphetimines)

Suspension, no Deno trade.

Embarrassing.

More embarrassing is that for 25 game suspension, this is his second offense.

Well, the Padres are having an interesting month. Maybin banged for 25 games -- amphetamines.

Suspension means 2nd offense … just plain dumb. If it was tough to move him before … now?

When Huston Street was traded he was quoted as saying the problems with the Padres is not in the FO, but with the players. I said I thought this was potentially a loaded quote. A couple posters responded saying that he probably just meant players weren't performing to expectations.

Well, I wonder if he meant something else. Like...effort, conditioning, character, etc etc etc. Who knows.

Wow!  Just.....Wow!   Just can't understand the reasoning behind this happening.....hopefully, he can get some help, overcome and move on from this....definitely going to keep him in my prayers.....    Yeah...we lose a player, but the person is more important... just sayin...

Re: Maybin banged for 25 games (amphetimines)

Statement from Cameron Maybin:

“I have been undergoing treatment for several years for a medical condition, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), for which I previously had a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE). Unfortunately, in my attempts to switch back to a medicine that had been previously ok’d, I neglected to follow all the rules and as a result I tested positive. I want to assure everyone that this was a genuine effort to treat my condition and I was not trying in any way to gain an advantage in my baseball career. I understand that I must accept responsibility for this mistake and I will take my punishment and will not challenge my suspension. I apologize to my family, friends, fans, teammates, and the entire Padres organization. I look forward to returning to the field and contributing to the success of my Club.”

I bet a lot of us aren't that surprised.

Not that Maybin has a history suggesting this would happen. More that if bad news is circling, it usually lands at Petco.

Exactly. Honestly, I feel bad for Maybin because I could see how a mixup or oversight might happen when dealing with the drugs associated with ADD. But like you said, if bad news is gonna hit there's a good chance its gonna hit us. We can't win.

And with regard to Deno, I think he still gets traded if a deal can be made. They can call up Fuentes to spell CF for 25 games. It'd be a good audition.

Don't understand feeling bad for Maybin. A guy making millions of dollars on a new contract extension. A player who like all players is beat over the head with PED and prescription drug protocols. And a player who has already been busted using amphetamines once before.

This is not bad luck. And Maybin is not a victim.

Cheater or not in terms of PED, he's selfish and immature. He's cheating the team and the fans.

I do feel bad for Maybin. He's got issues. I sympathize with that. I also ask myself how could an organization give this guy $25 million or whatever it was for FIVE years. It's irresponsible.

+1 … not sure what (if anything) was going on in his head (or his agents' ) but he did get "caught" the first time and IF that was just prescribed meds for ADD with all the "education" on the MLB drug policy and protocols … how (why) did he start the meds without he (or his agent or the Padres' trainer) getting clearance from MLB. Gets warned … and now "forgets" to get his change of meds (don't know who suggested he change … if anyone) cleared even though he is a one strike guy. Someone in that link of Maybin, his doctor, his agent, the Padres trainer would have know enough to say follow the procedures … just seems more than "bad luck" or an accident (either the first or second time). Failing the drug test is failing an intelligence test as well as being "suspicious".

Will Venable: "This one’s different, because Cam is only guilty of just not following the guidelines. He wasn't trying to gain any competitive advantage. This isn't a case of someone cheating baseball, cheating his teammates, not in any way. It was an honest mistake of someone needing to feel normal."

I'm with Davey on this one.
You keep ( relatively) the same roster 3 years in a row and you expect better results. These guys( OBVIOUSLY!) just aren't good enough. And at the top of the " Not very good list" are our top paid players: Headley, Quentin and Maybin. That's what, $23 million ? I'd say " Good riddance" to all of them.

I'd like to see the FO get rid of all the bigger salaries( Quentin, Johnson, Maybin, Benoit, Kennedy) and go into the off season with $40 million to spend on FA's. As much as I realize many guys won't come here due to Petco being a pitchers park, $15-20 million should persuade a couple of guys to come play with the best pitching staff in the NL.

I'm done with Maybin.  Let him realize his "potential" with someone else.

I know what Davey is saying, but I really doubt it. Huston Street is not the kind of person to throw people under the bus with parting shots as he walks out the door. If there was something that needed to be said, he would have said it.

I agree. We've proven that this hitting "core" is rotten. Let's bring in some new blood.

Re: Maybin banged for 25 games (amphetimines)

On the bright side …. the suspension just saved the Padres $600-700K this year for a guy that can't even start and is underwhelming when he does. Thank you Cam. biggrin Do it again for 100 games.
