Dick Enberg Has Gotta Go

Dick Enberg Has Gotta Go

Enberg starts the broadcast with "Ryu,the  27 year of age was the Korean team that won gold medal in 1988."  I don't mean to be cruel bur long can keep running him out there?  He calls the wrong players on the field, can't follow fly balls to call them, misses play after play after.  At least with Jerry it was gradual and they limited him to a few innings toward the end of his career. How can Enberg be the main TVv announcer?  A Moorad hangover. Who in San Diego relates to Ensberg?

Meh, he's not hurting anyone. I was anti-Enberg when he first started, but he's sort of settled into a decent routine with Mark Grant.

Plus that dumb blowhard Mike Pomeranz makes ANYONE sound good. Now I'm just happy to hear Enberg's voice because it isn't Pomeranz.

Re: Dick Enberg Has Gotta Go

Fair question …. he signed a 4 year deal in 2010 (think that would have ended last season) then at some point before it ended (someone … don't remember who) gave him an extension that covered 2014 … just not sure if covers anything beyond.

Heard an interview with Matt V. last week and he sounded (just my interpretation) that he may be ready to resettle in SD once his MLB.TV deal is over and would take the Padres gig again … clearly he liked working with Grant. No idea if the "new" Padres are interested.

Maybe a timing game of Enberg out / Matty V. in? Of course Matty V is not a favorite of everyone, so buyer's choice I guess. Also, "old" baseball announcers all across baseball cities never go easily … and removing them is always a sensitive issue …. so maybe Enberg gets a "reduced role" focused on "features" and less play by play. Never what to be the owner who fires the "old broadcasting legend" … maybe some quiet behind the scenes negotiations would work.

I do have a concern if it is Matty V re-teaming with Grant …. a good act needs a straight man and the funny guy … they are both trying to be the funny guy and often the game gets lost while they try to top each other. Same problem with Proctor and Grant a few years back. Games may be boring … but I do watch to see the game and don't really want the broadcast team to hijack the product.

This would even be harder for the Padres to do … get Leitner off the radio side … just way to negative (on an constant basis) about umpires, slow pitchers, and the like. We know the umpires are bad …. we know the pitchers are slow … don't have to keep repeating and repeating the negative …. just let it go and call the game, the complaints will not change anything.

Speaking as an "old guy" myself … the team needs to appeal more to the younger demographic …. Matty V would work …. as a general rule Enberg and Leitner do not.

I'm quite intrigued by this... where did you hear the interview? For my money, Matt and Mud are the most enjoyable TV duo we've ever had in San Diego. To have them back together would be absolutely fantastic.

Re: Dick Enberg Has Gotta Go

Nevermind. Found it.

Interview with Darren Smith on Friday.

It's even labeled as an interview with "a home-sick Matt Vasgersian."

He says he's "more than a little" home-sick. Hard to go from San Diego to anywhere east of the Rockies (I agree). I don't think it sounded like anything is imminent, but he certainly sounded like he loves being here and hates to leave. When Darren asked Matt how much longer he had on his contract, he let out a big sigh and just said "Long enough..."

If there's enough will on management's side of things, I could certainly see Matty V back here. I think I'd buy into your idea, Fenn, that they might attempt to time an Enberg departure with a re-arrival of Matty. That sure would make me happy.

Re: Dick Enberg Has Gotta Go

I agree that it is hard for a city to push out someone who has been there for decades, like Jerry Coleman or Ted Leitner.  Dick Enberg is not the same.  No one thinks of him as "Mr San Diego" or the "voice."  They could get rid of him and no one would bat an eye.  A LOT of people have complained about Enberg both on boards and on pre/post game show.  However the old ownership liked Enberg because it brought an era of sophistication to the broadcast (some famous name)

Hopefully now that Fowler is here, it will change.

I heard the Matty V thing too.  It seems like they dont really appreciate his wit as much on the national broadcasts, and every time he is on the airin SD (radio show interviews) he reminds people that he has pictures of SD in his office, and how much he loved being a teams PBP guy and how much he misses it.  Pretty much a big "HIGHER ME!" plea every few weeks on either 1090 or 1360

Re: Dick Enberg Has Gotta Go

Enberg could be problematic simply because he's got such a long and accomplished career. Regardless of whether he's appreciated by fans in San Diego, the club I'm sure doesn't want to risk any negative publicity should they unceremoniously release Dick Enberg.

Honestly, though, I don't think it'll be an issue. If management has the finger on the pulse of San Diego (debatable) they'd know Matty V would be welcomed back with open arms by many who watch their broadcasts. They'd also know Matty loves San Diego and would come back in a heart beat. Put those together, and it shouldn't be too hard to orchestrate some kind of plan that gives Enberg another year or two in the seat while Matty lives out his contracts with MLBN.

What they CAN'T do is cut Enberg and bring in some other random schmuck. I think their hands are sort of tied in that respect. Unless Enberg straight up retires, I think he's locked in until we've got a planned hire with some pedigree to take his place. God forbid they give Pomeranz the helm, though. That'd never happen, but then again... after hearing the "vocal minority" bullsh*t and watching as Andy Masur got fired for no good reason, I wouldn't put anything past management.

I would absolutely love to have Matt V back.  I didn't know he was sort of pining away for his days here.  He and Grant played off each other nicely.  Enberg drives me crazy.

Re: Dick Enberg Has Gotta Go

They cant fire Enberg which I think is the biggest problem.  Enberg is a WELL accomplished guy and a recognizable name.  They really need to convince him to retire from game broadcasts.  Until they do he will be here :/

At the same time I have no idea what management things.  The Bring Back the Brown thing IMO is a majority of fans and yet, ownership said that a "majority of fans like the current ones better"

Mel Proctor was hilarious and I would love a return of Matty V.  And no worries about taking away from this boring product.  In fact it would a good plan for comic relief until they score

Does anyone really like the current unform/logo set up?

I don't think bringing brown back in the traditional sense is a good idea, but ever since Petco opened the look of the team has been so bland and forgettable.  I actually wish they had thought of going back to the late 90s colors--the blue and orange--and ended up with something like the Astros current getup.

Honestly, I'd like to see our current uniforms but in a brown/mustard scheme. Just to see what it looked like. Make the home whites a shade towards off-white and I think the uniforms would actually be pretty sharp. Even the blue alternate tops could be brown with yellow piping and SD (or hell, even yellow with brown piping).

I dunno. I sort of figure you go full brown and mustard, or you don't do anything at all. The 90s were nice, but they're still blue. Blue is boring. Brown is ours, and no one else can claim as much. That's what I love about it.

Re: Dick Enberg Has Gotta Go

I think it has to be a gradual change.
I just can't see us going full Brown/mustard ala the 78's right away if at all.
I prefer the subtle Grey/White with brown lettering and gold piping like the 69-72's

I like the gold highlight around the brown lettering, like in my icon.

I don't how old you are, but Chick Hearn, the great Laker anouncer, was like that the last 10-15 years of his illustroius career.

I guess you've just got to take it for what it is...........and GOD knows what that is!
