The Padres are riding high with their first sweep of the season, beating top pitcher Cueto, and taking a 4-game win streak into this series. Last April the Padres took two out of three from the Giants at Petco Park and are 5-4 against them this season. The Giants have lost 4 of their last 5 games and in that span the Padres went from 13 games behind to 10 games behind. The Padres are 9 games behind the Dodgers, who lost two in a row and playing a 4-game series in Colorado this weekend.

• The last time theat Stults faced the Giants he shut them and Hudson down allowing only one run. This time he faces Cain, who already lost to the Padres twice this season. Stults is coming off back-to-back solid games. I hope he continues to be solid, not just for the win, but to bring up his trade value.

• Hudson is 1-1 against the Padres this season beating the Padres in San Diego and was rocked by them in San Francisco last week for 6 runs (4 ER) on 9 hits. This time the Padres have Despaigne on the mound and let's hope he keeps up his solid performance.

• This will be payback against Lincecum, who beat the Padres twice this season and no-hitting the Padres last week. The first time he faced them he gave up 3 ER on 7 hits. This time around the Padres have Hahn, who is currently one of the Padre best pitchers.

Keep The Faith
GO PADRES!

Hard as it is to believe, there are now 8 teams with a worse winning % than the Padres … and the Padres are tied with a 9th, the Red Sox.

I guess that illustrates how our agony is probably less about all the losing, and more about the way they are losing.

Giants lose again on Thursday. They have lost 6 of their last 7 games and have been in a downhill spiral since June 9 with a  5-17 record in the span. In that same the Padres went 10-12. Let's hope the Giants don't come out of their slump this weekend. Unfortunately, the Dodgers won and retook first place. I wish they would go into a slump.

I don't care about some other team's slump. I rather like us winning.  The rest will take care of its self.  All I ask is competitive baseball.  They don't have to win the WS in the next three years. It is interesting to think were we could have been with even an average ability to score runs. The good news is we are Moore's Divorce/ Jeff Morrad free and Fowler and company seem like a no BS group.  The way our pitching is developing brighter days are ahead boys.   GO PADRES !!

I agree with the point about being competitive--if this team had, as a whole, hit even a little better in the first half it would have been much easier to stomach.

Game 1 lineup:

1. Smith, RF
2. Headley, 3B
3. Quentin, LF
4. Grandal, C
5. Medical, 1B
6. Maybin CF
7. Conrad, 2B
8. Amarista, ss
9. Stults, P

34-year old Conrad Brooks makes his Padres debut. He has a .275 avg, .347 OBP, .526 SLG, .873 OPS, 18 HR, 57 RBI and 33 BB in MILB El Paso. He also has 78 strikeout SO. His career MLB stats are significantly lower. His best season in MLB was in 2008 in Oakland. In 46 AB, more than any season, he had a .348 ABG, .404, .652 SLG, 1.056 OPS, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 5 BB, and 15 SO. Since then his offensive performance has waned. He had 5 errors in 2011, his only season with more than 1.

It's Stults in there that worries me most.

Typical Stults outing.  Even when he's pitching "well" he's still having to work too hard for it.  80+ pitches through 5.

He needs to go as soon as Cashner and/or Erlin come back.

Stults and Headley helping their trade value.

Amarista has been our 2nd best player the last couple weeks.

Prospect I'm Championing.........Jordan Paroubeck

I'm pretty sure Stults has absolutely zero trade value.

I did not agree with that decision at all. Pinch hitting Deno for Smith is absurd, even against a LHP. Deno has been in a mega-slump for 2 months and Smith is our best hitter. Ugh.

It's because Black can't see past the lefty/right matchups, which he continually overuses.

Denorfia is hitting .234/.290/.328 against LHP this year.  Black isn't a very good manager.

in the last 5 games, the Padres rotation gave up only 2 runs.

Boy did Headley ever need a day like this. 4 for 4 is awesome any way you shake it... even if you factor in his bone headed base running on his RBI single.

Meh, he's been bad overall. In his career he's pretty good against LHP. The problem isn't that he was pinch hitting against a southpaw, its that he was pinch hitting for our best hitter.
