The Padres are coming off back-to-back ugly series finishing the homstandwith 2-4 record and losing 5 of the last 7 games. In this series, the Padres will have their three best pitchers on the mound. The pitching matchup favors them over the Phillies. But, the Phillies have a better offense than the Padres, despite losing 8 of their last 9 games. Depite the lack of, or should I say horrendous, offense, I think the Padres have a good chance of taking at least two games. Anyone think that there is a chance that the Padres could actually pull off their first sweep of the season against this team? After all there is no Stults in this series.

Game 1:
• Kennedy is coming off an outstanding start allowing only 2 ER on 5 hits in 6 IP against the Pirates and the only the pitcher in the series that was able to shut down them down to keep the Padres in it for the win. He has a 2.00 ERA in his last three starts and allowed more than 3 ER only three times out of 13 starts this season.
• Burnett posted a 2.06 ERA in 7 starts through May 3, but he is 1-4 with a 7.25 ERA in 6 starts since. In his last start in Washington, he allowed 10 hits, 8 runs and 4 BB in 6 IP. He has a career 4.25 ERA and .250 BAA in 9 games against the Padres.

Game 2:
• After allowing only 1 ER in 5 of 6 starts, Ross was knocked around for 6 runs (5 ER) on 5 hits and 3 BB in 5.2 IP. However, he pitched 4 solid innings before giving up 4 ER in the 6th inning. In only 4 starts has he given up more than 3 ER and posted a 1.92 ERA in 9 of his 13 starts.
• Hamels is coming off back-to-back solid starts allowing only a combined 1 ER, 11 hits and 6 BB in 14.2 IP against the Reds and Mets. He has not pitched as well at home (4.83 ERA) as on the road (1.95 ERA). However, he is 8-2 with a 2.39 ERA in 14 career starts against the Padres.

Game 3:
• Cashner is coming off a solid start pitching a 2 hit, 1 walk 6 IP shutout against the Nats in his first start back form the DL. Only once in 10 starts has he given up more than 2 ER, which was in Milwaukee, and has posted a 1.73 ERA in 9 of his 10 starts.
• Kendrick is coming off a rough start allowing 4 ER on 6 hits and a season high 5 BB in 7 IP. He has allowed 4 ER or more in 3 of his last 4 starts.

NL West:   Nationals at Giants   •  Dodgers at Reds  •  Braves at Rockies  •  Astros at Dbacks

GO PADRES!

With Kennedy and Cashner both pitching, I suppose it is possible that the Padres could actually take 2 out of 3 if they could score more than 1 run a game.   That's the big IF

I still think they are long overdue to get swept in a 3 game series though...could this be the one ?

Come on Man!  PADS can sweep this with some luck if the "awesome" Ross shows up & we get lucky and squeak out a 2-1 against Hamels...   my broom is ... in the corner gathering dust!

I kind of look at it this way... Keep laying big enough turds and it will eventually sink. Padres hitters have been laying some muy grande turds but they haven't taken it to that next level yet. Buoyancy issues also factor into it.

Elegantly stated.

Once again, Deno is not on the bench. I know he will tomorrow with a LHP on the mounf, but he has only 1 start in the last six games, seven counting tonight. He is wasteing awa y on tnhe bench when he should be starting more. He is a better hitter than Venable, who has a .185 avg vs. RHP and .308 avg vs LHP this season.  Sure, his career vs. RHP (.256 avg)  is better than his career vs. LHP (.238 avg). But, not much.

Perfect start.
Couldn't be more typical of our season.
We catch a break and a ball rolls right between Howard's legs giving us 1st and 3rd with one out and Quentin hits a tailor made 6-4-3 DP to end the inning without a run.
Perfect!

That may have been Venables best AB of the season.
He missed a slider down and in and then, inexplicably, laid off the next two that Burnett threw and forced him to throw a strike which he promptly deposited into the RF seats.
Just goes to show if you lay off the balls and make the pitcher actually throw strikes.....you either draw a walk or have a chance to hit the ball hard!
Duh!

Kennedy had 3 strong innings with a low pitch count and then he falls apart.

The announcers stated that Cashner is not pitching on Thursday, but on Friday to open the series against the Mets. Stults pitching is on Thursday instead, which seems too soon. He pitched on Sunday. Black is overprotective of Cash to want to give him an extra day.

Yawn!

I actually fell asleep for about 20 minutes with the game on TV

At least the Padres are good for something.

With Cashner not pitching until Friday, I'm smelling a Phillies sweep

This Padres offense is so inept. They are so bad that I'd bet that if the '84 Padres were to bat today they would do better.

Re: San Diego Padres @ Philadelphia Phillies (June 10 - 12)

If I were a betting man, I'd bet a little league pitcher could shut the Padres down.

As for Kennedy, If not for one bad inning, the score would have been 2-1 Padres. He pitched a pretty good game except for the 4th inning.

Cabrera had Rollins dead rights and botched a routine fielding play. The only thing Cabrera is good for is his strong throwing arm. Nothing else.

The Padres 20-4 when scoring 4 runs or more. That means they are 6-32 when scoring less than 4 runs.

Yes, but they got five hits tonight.

The city should throw them a parade.

No, this is a (relatively) "good" move...  Bud does NOT want Stults going back to back with whoever #5 starter ends up being.  Too likely they both go less than 4 IP.  Cashner is starter most likely to give 6+ IP, so should help pen a lot.

Stults didn't throw many pitches his last outing.... due to getting blasted.
Stults really had decent trade value before season started, but we kept him for depth and now his value = 0.

Some season when you "need" Stults because you literally have no other SP option frown

Even better in the "how crappy is this season" category.... article on Union Tribune about how we "need":

.... the lowest batting average regular in MLB (Gyorko) to come back quickly

....  because his replacement (J. Peterson) is hitting even worse!!   ohlordohlordohlordohlord

Yeah, Offense (I'm going to stop naming pitcher, since who pitches is pretty irrelevant) loses game 1,

Now Hamels, then gift wrapping Stults for Phils in Philly.... home remedy for THEIR ailing bats.

Don't Pads go against anyone "Stults-y" in hitter's ballpark ever?    Ever?
