The Padres enter into the final series of the month and have a 4-5 record this season against AL teams. The only AL team they beat so far this season is when they won the series against The Tigers. The ChiSox offense leads MLB in strikeouts with 487K, which is 55 more than the Padres 432 K, and their pitchers have given up the most walks with 223 BB. Still, this will be a tough series, especially with this Padres offense. The Padres have given up 148 BB. The ChiSox will have two LHP on the mound, which means Deno will likely get two starts this series. I hope Medica will continue his hot hitting.

Game 1:
• Kennedy is coming off an outstanding performance against the Cubs allowing only 1 ER on 2 hits and 2 BB in 6 IP earning his first home win. Despite a rough outing in last road start against the Reds allowing 5 ER on 11 hits in 6 IP, Kennedy has been much better on the road posting a 2.88 ERA in 4 starts. In three of those road starts he has posted a 1.42 ERA and allowed only 1 ER and 3-4 hits in each time. He leads the rotation in strike outs with 72 K.
• Dank is coming off an outstanding performance against the Yankees in which he allowed no walks in a 3-hit, 104 pitch, 8 IP shutout. He has given up 3 ER or less in 7 of his 10 starts posting a 2.78 ERA in those games and has pitched better at home (3.13 ERA) than on the road (6.83 ERA). He also has a 100+ pitch count in 8 of his 10 starts usually going no more than 6 IP. The highest was 123 pitches in 5.2 IP.

Game 2:
• Ross, who was on his way to his 6th win and did not give up a walk for the first time this season, had a rough inning against the Dbacks falling apart after 5 solid innings and a 2-run lead. Prior to this outing he had given up 1 ER in each of the last 4 starts posting a 1.29 ERA in that span. Unlike his solid 1.54 home ERA performance, he doesn't pitch as well on the road posting a 5.02 ERA and giving up 4-5 ER in 3 of his 5 road starts. He leads the rotation in walks with 26 BB.
• Rienzo is coming off a tough start against the Yankees who handed him the loss despite allowing 2 ER on 6 hits in 5 IP in a 7-1 loss due to two defensive errors. He has not allowed more than 2 ER and 2 BB in his last 3 starts posting a 3.12 ERA in that span.

Game 3:
• Stults is coming over a good outing allowing only 3 ER in 5 IP. But, he gave up 4 BB, the most this season, and 1 IBB, which is too many walks. It didn't help that Amarista's fielding mistake allowed two of the runs. He has allowed more than 3 ER only 3 times and has 3.18 ERA in 8 of his 11 starts. His .318 BAA is the highest of any Padres pitcher.
• Quitana is also coming off a solid outing allowing only 2 ER and 2 BB on 5 hits in 6 IP against the Indians. He has recorded a win in his 2 of his last 3 starts and has given up more than 3 ER only once in 11 starts. Every time he allowed 3 ER or more, which is in 5 of his 11 starts, the ChiSox would lose. If 2 ER or less allowed, they would win.

NL WEST: Giants @ Cardinals  •  Rockies at Cleveland  •  Pirates at Dodgers  •  Reds at Dbacks

GO PADRES!

Re: San Diego Padres @ Chicago White Sox (May 30 - June 1)

I forgot that since the Padres are playing in an AL stadium, they will be using the DH. Black will most likely use Quentin as the designated hitter in the three-game series. That would be good. I can see a lineup looking like this in two of three games:

1. Cabrera, SS
2. Denorfia, LF
3. Smith, RF
4. Quentin, DH
5. Maybin, CF
6. Headley, 3B
7. Medica, 1B
8. Gyorko, 2B
9. Rivera or Grandal, C

Having Deno, Smith, Maybin and CQ in the lineup is huge and makes for a stronger lineup. If Medica continues his hot hitting, even better. Black will probably have Headley bat higher up, probably 5th, but I think he should be lower at 7th.

Medica and Quentin probably both play in the games against lefties....which means Seth Smith more than likely sits.
Outfield of Medica-Maybin-Deno.

Bud basically has to start either Alonso or Seth Smith vs. the 2 lefties.  I would go with Smith.  Maybe 1 start each so they each start 2 of 3 games in series.

Why does he "have too"?
He has not shown a willingness to start Smith against a lefty even when he was at his hottest.
He may start Alonso but personally I'd rather see Medica against lefties while he's hitting.

Quentin is DH and Medica is LF ….. Alonso at 1B (Smith sits).

Not much difference against LHP between Alonso and Smith ….. 2014 Alonso (.152) and Smith (.188), last season Alonso (.242) and Smith (.235) …. so neither one can hit LHP.

Brutal fourth inning.
Kennedy goes 3-0 on three straight hitters.....walking two.
Maybin forgets how many outs there were and let's a guy advance to 3rd on a routine fly ball and then Kennedy throws a wild pitch on the "very next" pitch!
Figures!.......Ugh.
Bad News Bears out there that inning.

Wow.....did no one else watch this game?
Alonso has definitely straightened himself out.
CQ just needs to stay healthy.
Seth Smith needs to play everyday.
Rivera has made a believer out of me.
Kennedy, despite an erratic fourth inning, was spectacular.

How nice would our future be if we knew for certain we could pencil in Cashner,Kennedy, and Ross for 175+ IP for each of the next 3 seasons?

It's Friday night !   I did catch a couple of innings and Kennedy pitched well as he has most of the season.

Hard to watch an entire game of the last place Padres though
This Team makes me Drink !

Re: San Diego Padres @ Chicago White Sox (May 30 - June 1)

It was amazing the ChiSox didn't score more in the 4th with the Maybin's mental lapse  and Kennedy's inability to find the plate. Aside from that inning, Kennedy was solid. He beat the Cubs last week and the ChiSox tonight. He owns Chicago.

Great hits by Maybin and Alonso, who made up for his mental error in the 2nd trying to stretch a single into a double when he clearly should not have.

Street has been phenomenal this season with 16 straight saves and the only closer in MLB not to have blown one.

We should call Headley,"Mr. Automatic Out" or sometimes, "Mr. Rally Killer". He is useless with a bat.

Let's take the game to tomorrow morning.

GO PADRES!

Re: San Diego Padres @ Chicago White Sox (May 30 - June 1)

There has been a pitching change for Sunday. Instead of LHP Quintana, LHP Chris Sale will pitch
Sundays matchup vs Stults

. :

Chris Sale
4-0, 1.73 ERA
36.1 IP, 1 HR, 8 BB
43 K, .138 BAA

This guy will be tougher to beat than Quintana. He pitched 3 hitless innings against the Indians in last Tuesday because of a rain delay. He has allowed only 1 ER in his last 16 IP. The game before the Indians he allowed 1 hit in 6 IP and struck out 10 against the Yankees..

Stults is going to need run support with Sale on the mound.

But, tomorrow It's Ross on the mound for the Padres. Let's hope he doesn't collapse again.

We're not in last place, we're just 11 games behind 1st place.

But we're only 3.5 games out of the Wild Card.
How crazy is that?

What has happened to Alonso?  A few weeks ago it was "home run watch" as he was approaching an entire year with out a roundtripper... now he has 4???

Not complaining.  Alonso is no longer one of the top 5 worst players in baseball (though Gyorko and Venable still are)

Re: San Diego Padres @ Chicago White Sox (May 30 - June 1)

With at least some of the Padres hitters getting hot … Quentin and Maybin back from injury, Medica back from AAA, and Alonso just turning it around …. might call for a line-up adjustment. Headley actually has regressed a bit so time to move him down to #7 (or so) in the line-up and go with a Cabrera / Maybin / Smith or Denorfia / Quentin or Medica / Alonso / Gyorko (at least he is driving in some runs) / Headley / Rivera or Grandal. At least the top 5 are hitting and that might cluster some hits together. For the CWS might just keep Quentin in DH and Medica in LF.

Being only 3.5 out in the wild card with 4 months to go …. if the current hot bats stay a least productive and Headley / Gyorko / Venable / Grandal just get close to their historical lines … could be interesting with the way the pitching is performing.

Re: San Diego Padres @ Chicago White Sox (May 30 - June 1)

Game 2 lineup:

1. Cabrera, SS
2. Smith, RF
3. Quentin, DH
4. Headley, 3B
5. Alonso, 1B
6. Venable, RF,
7. Maybin, CF
8. Rivera, C
9. Amarista, 2B

Once again, a different Black lineup. I think this is the first time this season Gyorko is not playing and Amarista is at 2nd.
Hedley should not be in the cleanup spot nor in the top half of the order. He's be better suited between 7th and 9th.
