The Padres are coming off a 8-0 route losing to the Royals, who took the series, and so far are 2-4 on this homestand. It doesn't seem to matter what the matchups are, the Padres offense cannot get it done and the FO needs to do an overhaul. The Padres inability to produce in Tuesdays 12-inning game was far more the reason for the loss than Vncent giving up 2 ER. In MLB, the Padres are last in runs, RBI, avg., OBP, OPS, and SLG. They are 3rd in GO, 2nd in GIDP, and 9th in S0. It doesn't help when Black takes out Deno, who is one of the best hitters on the team. If the Padres win one game in this series, it will likely be the first with Marlins Jordan pitching. The one thing the Padres might have on thier side is that the Marlins are 2-10 on the road.

Game 1:
• Kennedy is coming off a start in which he had given up a season high 11 hits but allowed on 3 ER in a 3-4 loss to the Dbacks. He has given up more than 3 ER only once surrendering 4 ER against the Tigers at home. Despite his high 5.09 Home ERA, he has not given up more than 3 ER in 3 of his 4 home starts.
• The Marlins Jordan has had only two starts this season, both at home, and is coming off the DL from a shoulder sprain. He has given up 5 ER on 8 hits to the Rockies and 6 ER on 9 hits to the Dodgers, respectively. This will be the first time the Padres will face him this season.

Game 2:
• Ross held the Dbacks to 3 ER on 7 hits in his last start in a 4-3 Padres walk-off win to avoid a sweep. Like Cashner, he pitches better at Petco Park posting a 1.67 Home ERA. In 5 of his 7 starts, he has a 1.95 ERA.
• The Marlins Fernandez shutout the Padres in 6.2 IP the last time he faced them in April. But that was in Miami. This season he has pitched 4 shutouts and has a astounding 0.07 ERA in 6 of his 7 starts. He has a 4.50 ERA on the road, but that was dueto oly one bad start against the Phillies, which he gave up 6 ER on 8 hits. The other road start was 8 IP shutout of Braves. He will be tough to beat.

Game 3:
• Stults gave up a season-high 11 hits in his last start against the Dback, but managed to allowed only 3 ER. Only twic in 7 starts has he allowed more than 3 ER. In 5 of his 7 starts, he has a 3.38 ERA.
• The Marlins Eovaldi struck out 10 in his last start> He has given up more than 3 ER just once when he gave up 4 ER in Philadelpia.

Game 4:
• Erlin is coming off best start of the season in which he gave solid, outstanding performance in the 2nd game against ther Royals allowing only 1 ER on 3 H in 7 IP. The Padres losss due to to the Padres offense ineptness far more than Vincent giving up 2 ER in the 12th. He has a 2.88 ERA in 5 of his 7 starts.
• Fernandez pitched a no-hitter against the Tigers in his final start of the 2013 season. He has a 2.09 ERA in 6 of his 7 starts this season that include two 9- inning shutouts, both in Miami.

I am trying to keep the faith.
GO PADRES!

Even against the Dolphins we'd be lucky to not be swept.

Oops! I goofed. biggrin

That is so funny I made that mistake.

I am so used to calling them the Florida Marlins that when I think Miami, I think Dolphins.

Is it me, or do the Padres always seem to fare poorly against the lowly teams?

(Yes, I know. They fare poorly against every team, but you get my drift.)

When a team hits the way we do it seems even worse against teams we should beat.
Hoping and praying for four runs is not a fun way to spend a season.

So just looking at the pitching matchups...

Game 1: WIN (really only game we would be favored)
Game 2: LOSS (I think this will be a 2-1 final and maybe they can eeke it out)
Game 3: LOSS (hope we dont get blown out)
Game 4: Toss-up (I trust Erlin...more than Stults, I think this might end up being a 4-3 final)

Yeah, these matchups do NOT look good.  Pressure on Kennedy to win today.  Hope Marlins' road struggles continue.  I'd say for Bud to go with guys that don't K so much, but beyond Denorfia & Smith who would that be?  These guys could top their personal bests for K's/game Instead of our intrepid hitters trying to "drive up the pitch count", how about trying to drive that dead red fastball coming down the middle on the 1st pitch!

Re: Miami Marlins @ San Diego Padres (May 8 - 11)

Padres K's (position players only)

1. Cabrera 37K, 142 AB, .215 SO AVG
2.Venable 36K, 116 AB, .310 SO AVG
3. Gyorko 35K, 118 AB, .297 SO AVG
4. Grandal 22K, 67 AB, .328 SO AVG
5. Headley 20K, 70 AB, .286 SO AVG
,6. Smith 18K, 88 AB, .205 SO AVG
7. Alonso 15K, 111 AB, .135 SO AVG
8. Amarista 15K, 73 AB, .205 SO AVG
9. Medica 15K, 31 AB (now in minors), .484 SO AVG
10 Denorfia 13K, 101 AB, .129 SO AVG
11. Rivera 11k, 41AB, .268 SO AVG
12. Hundley 8K, 41 AB, .195 SO AVG
13. Maybin 4K, 29AB, .138 SO AVG

Cabrera has the most SO on the team, but Medica struck out almost half the time and is now in the minors. Grandal strikes out most on the active roster having the highest SO/AB pct. Venable is a close second. Deno has only 13K and strikes out the least in SO/AB.

Three of the four players that strike out the least have the highest batting avg: Maybin (.379 avg) Hundley. (317 avg), Denorfia (.297 avg ). Alonso may have a low strikeout pct, but he also has a very low batting avg (.162)

Hundley may not be great defensively, but he has good bat and needs to be in the lineup just as much as Deno.

I don't know why BB thinks he needs to rest his starters in the last game of every series. But, he needs to change his way of thinking, even on the lefty/righty matchups. He hurts the team with his way of managing.

Venable and Cabrera are tied on the club for caught stealing (3). However Cabrera has stolen 2 of 5 attempts and Venable was caught all three attempts as a result of making stupid mental mistakes. I see no reason to keep him.

I'll help you out on the BB part-he's a former pitcher and there haven't been many worth a lick as a skipper...

Another average pitcher we're facing tonight......we better start scoring some runs or I might even turn off the game.
I haven't turned off a game,other than to sleep,for about five years!

Kind of ironic our pitcher hits a home run.
These guys feel they have to take matters into their own hands!

This game is making my stomach hurt.
Kennedy with 6 ip,3 hits,12 K's AND hits a home run and he still may not get a win!

Kennedy 7 IP,4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 12 K

1-2 with a home run!!

Cant get the win!

I thought yesterday was a lesson in futility, no runs by a position player in how many innings now?

Looks like Stanton will be putting a couple of nails in the coffin...

Kennedy pitched like the one from couple of years back.  I hope he can retain it for the long term.

Frustration is not even the word.  Aggravation... maybe?

I think right now it is just apathy/comical.  I hate to say it, but I almost want them to fail.  Its like a limbo game... how low can they go?  How low can they go?

Re: Miami Marlins @ San Diego Padres (May 8 - 11)

A brilliant performance by Kennedy with 12K and the Padres couldn't give him run support and Gyorko once again blunders a routine out.

Yes, had Gyorko made the routine out the Marlins would not have scored. But I blame the the Padres offense awhole  lot more for the inability to produce runs. Changes need to be made, such as getting rid of players like Gyorko , Amarista, and Venebal, among others.
