Re: Spring Training

Is anyone else going to be out in Phoenix for Spring Training this year? I'm going 3/1-3/4. I'm going earlier than usual because I want to try to catch some of the young kids. Are they only on the backfields or will they be playing in the regular games? Thanks for any info.

Dont expect to see any "25 man roster" pitcher until week 2 (so about the time you start going).  Even then it will be mainly minor leaguers for the 1st half of spring training.

Minor league camp wont open till the 2nd week of March, so there shouldnt be any minor leagues games going on.  However you might be able to catch a B squad game or 2, but most of them are not going to be on a schedule but rather decided upon that day.  You can always just walk around on the back fields and see who you can find working out.  Good probability you wil find minor leaguers who reported for camp early, working out at the back fields.

Re: Spring Training

Love the salami, most interested in the defense at 2B...if he hits for power and average in the Spring AND can play a decent 2B the team looks a bit different going into the season.  what I mean is that if I told you the team added a 20HR 80RBI guy but didn't touch LF RF 3B 1B or C, you might think this team could contend for a playoff spot this year if the pitching is any good.  And I realize this is a big IF.

No matter what kind of spring he has I expect he starts in Tucson because of arbitration.

Maybe more importantly, if they delay his ML arrival until late April, the gain another full year of control.....basically they add 2019 as a control year.

Re: Spring Training

Field the best team you can when you can. If that means Gyorko starts the year on the ML team as the starting 2bag then that's exactly what should happen. This nitpicking garbage to avoid putting best players available out there needs to end

I guess I'm ok with it if its just three weeks or so.
Forsyth can handle second for the time being.
Blanks or Amarista could take the ML spot until its time.Make the decision then as to who to send down.

The decision may be "helped" by the need to find a 25 man roster slot out of ST...my guess he is up against Guzman and Blanks for that last slot...maybe Darnell.  Their "advantage" is that they are already on the 40 man roster.....Gyorko is not.  Now all three have MiL options and at least three 40 man roster slots will open up when Luebke, Wieland, and Liriano go on the 60 day DL.  Offsetting that would be DePaula coming off the restricted list  and potentially Garcia and Stauffer being added.  Also, in May a slot has to open for the return of Grandal from his suspension. So, at some point, Byrnes will have to make some trades or waive a player or two........if nothing presents itself in ST, he may chose to buy some time trying to get a good deal and send Gyorko to AAA for April.

Keep in mind that Gyorko has yet to show he can play 2B effectively or is ready for ML pitching....so I wouldn't just cede the position to him just yet without judging his readiness during ST.  One month in 2013 without Gyorko at the start of his career is an easy tradeoff for an additional year (2019) of Gyorko when he is...I hope...performing at All-Star levels and the Padres are really in contention.

RE: Spring Training

Agree with FENN on Gyorko starting in MiLB. Lets give Logan a look for at least the first third and keep Jed under control for a Ionger.

I continue to worry that James Darnell is a talent who might slip through the cracks. He was a second round pick for Pete's sake and his only sin is injuries. With Liriano out this year I hope they give him a shot to polish his game in AAA in RF and then a shot at RF in MLB next year if he shows well. I've said it before, but he reminds me of Jason Bay at the same stage in their careers.

If Gyorko is worth it he wont see the end of his control years anyway.....Start the best team available if you want to win. If you don't.......well........

So in your opinion Headley is definitely gone?
Because he is definitely "worth it".

Looks like they still are looking at Darnell as a prospect. Can't draw any conclusions this early but I see they have played Darnell in LF (continuing the conversion from 3B started last season) and have suggested that he may get some time at 1B.  That looks to put him in direct competition with Blanks (who has been starting at 1B but has played LF) and Guzman (again LF / 1B type).  All three have MiL options left for 2013.  He may end up in AAA just to give him some steady play after missing so much time last season but he may also have the advantage that he can play 3B...a bit more versatility.

Also saw that Rincon has been at 3B...there was earlier indication that he too would get worked in LF....maybe the initial placements suggest that the Padres see Darnell as the preferred LF option.

If Gyorko makes the team...and barring a trade...Tucson could be very interesting with Darnell / Blanks / Guzman / Rincon in the line-up and being shuffled between LF / 1B / DH / 3B.  Never know who may go down for a DL stint but based on history...Quentin would be the bet leaving a need for a LF fill....let's see who gets the bulk of work at LF in ST / AAA.

I'm afraid this current ownership isn't going to have much choice with Headley, but they DO have that choice with Gyorko......And there is no reason to think they can't still get something done with Headley. Too many are using the past issues to predict the future direction of this new group......When the truth is we really have no idea what they are going to be willing to do.

For all anyone knows, at this point, they will lock down Headley for an unprecedented franchise contract.

And you always field the BEST team you can at all times

Good news.....Gyorko homers again.

Bad news......Jaff Decker has played in all 4 ST games...0 for 10 with 6 Ks...can't figure out what happened to him since his calling card was his bat....last chance?

Well,I agree.
But aren't you contradicting yourself?
You're saying if Gyorko plays well he'll certainly be gone before we see the end of his control years but at the same time saying we can't predict the future direction of this group from past issues?
Proves its hard not to,huh?
