Re: Gameday 8-15-2014: A's seek to continue mastery of lefties

According to The Geek sports betting blog, the A's have a Return on Investment of +23.9% against left-handed starting pitchers.

The A's as a team have the best ROI in the American League at +9.7%, so that +23.9%  ROI against southpaws is pretty impressive.

Of course, none of us should be betting on baseball.  (Especially Minstrel, whose taunting of the baseball gods may doom us all).

To my old eyes, that's a perfect size!

Now that Moss has started hitting again (7-12 in the KC series), I'm surprised he's not in the lineup. He's actually hitting .282 vs. LHP this year even though his power comes vs. RHP. Melvin has not been platooning him all year, but now he sits for the second time in 3 games.

I don't bet on sports. Things are too variable, especially with odds.

Except the A's winning the division. Lead pipe cinch.

Well they do have Gomes now which they can platoon him with but overall this lineup doesn't give me a lot of confidence especially the bottom part. Seems to me pitch to Callaspo.....pitch around Reddick...then pitch to Parrino then you get the pitcher. Three potential easy outs around Reddick.

Alex Wood is a pretty good pitcher for the Braves.  Saw him pitch this Sunday night against the Nats and he dominated them.  Not a well known name, but like the A's, the Braves churn out pitching.

I watched that game too.  Definitely a funky delivery.  I've heard of batters putting their foot in the bucket, but never seen it with a pitcher.  Hides the ball well too.  And somehow hits 95mph without using his legs at all.

Let's Go A's!!!!

I'll just say to get this out of the way on this gameday thread: even though the A's have the best record in the league, this team isn't incredible, the playoffs are not a lock, and they have flaws especially offensively.

mariners are only 7.5 back

but  27 of 42 are road games, 11 game road trip in end of september

A's 27-20 v al west. that needs to improve

22 games vs mets, phillies, astros, rangers, white sox. sadly A's played better prior to the current "soft" schedule. So anything can happen

That's .570.  It's not going to improve much, and shouldn't have to.

Disagree there if it doesn't improve much I think we will get left behind. Out of contenders for a division title only Milwaukee, Detroit and Kansas CIty are worse in their division. We have to improve that especially facing mostly teams from our division down the stretch.

that seriously looks like a AAA lineup.  too many fringe mlb bats on the roster.

Which probably means they'll score 5+ runs and surprise me.

I would love to see the A's put up a 5 spot in the first or second inning on the Braves and then if Hammel can pitch like he has and the bullpen figure out their issues hopefully that would be enough.

However don't know if seeing that with this lineup.

Last time I questioned a lineup as light as this one, they scored 11. So....this lineup sucks balls.

Except for the Angels, a game against a team in our division is the same as a game against anyone else.  We need to win as many games as possible, period.

Re: Gameday 8-15-2014: A's seek to continue mastery of lefties

I think if we play .570 ball against the Angels the rest of the way, we'll win the division. If you round up, that's 6-4, which would mean adding two games to our current lead. With only 30ish other games left to play, that would put a lot of pressure on the Angels to be nearly perfect against everyone else. They're a very good team, but can they make up four games against everyone else?
