@Ken_Rosenthal: #Cubs in serious talks with #Athletics on big trade, sources tell me and @jonmorosi. If completed, Hammel and/or Samardzija would go to A’s.

So, Jason Hammel it is!

@Ken_Rosenthal: Addison Russell’s name has been discussed with #Cubs, sources tell me and @jonmorosi. He is not playing today for #Athletics’ Double A club.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I mean, no right?

Heh, I posted before I saw your follow-up. Hammel AND/or Samardzija?

I find the "AND" laughably implausible.

Well, if it's Russell, it better be "and" and it better include a lot of cash to cover an extension for Samardijza.

But no.

Like a lot people here, I imagine, I'm open to trading anyone in the system outside of Russell...

No way Russell is involved in a deal for only Hammel. Samardzija , Yes.

If Russell is going, Baez better be part od the deal coming back.

highly doubtful theyd give up rueell for a rental in  hammel. and samardzija wouldnt be here beyond 2015, so a risky trade

Or Soler, I guess. Or someone. Six years of a stud positional prospect is not worth a year and a half of Samardijza. It would be like the Holliday deal all over again, except worse because IMO Russell is a better prospect than CarGo was (though, granted, Holliday was better than Samadijza is...still, though, yuck).

cubs certainly have prospects on their end to toss in. vogelbach looks like an A's type hitter, alcantara is a nice 2b prospect

Trading Russell would be beyond stupid.  Hope this deal falls apart.  No team is giving away big time prospects any longer.

Re: Athletics and Cubs in serious trade talks

Hope it doesn't involve Russell. If he's going to be traded for a starting pitcher, David Price should be the target.

A cubs insider just tweeted could be a three way.

Or dear baby jesus please let it be a three way.

Billy could turn Russell into Price, Samardzjfhhfjrjdh AND Hammel in a threeway.

Re: Athletics and Cubs in serious trade talks

That said, I'd probably have had a similar reaction 20 years ago when Ynoa was a top prospect. Of course, Ynoa was much further from the majors and a pitcher, so it's not the same thing, but still...prospects often don't pan out. We should recognize that this (pretty successful) team was built because Beane and the front office used prospects as trade chips. It's definitely not out of the question that they keep that mentality going to try and win a title this year and/or next.

I'd rather keep Russell, but even if he ends up leaving...well, we'll see. It's been a long time since the A's developed a star or superstar and I'd hate to lose the best chance they've had in eons.

I wonder if Starlin Castro would be part of the deal.

Re: Athletics and Cubs in serious trade talks

NO WAY Beane does a Russell for Hammel deal straight up. It'd have to be a Castro/Hammel duo IMO.

Samardzija I still want dealt one for one with Russell, CHC would have to add another piece.

Re: Athletics and Cubs in serious trade talks

If it's Samardzija I'd guess Beane would want Valbuena as a 2b option and he won't be a FA until 2017.

I'd still be VERY HESISTANT to trade Russell.
