Jaso At Catcher In 2014???

according to David Forst, Jaso is cleared to catch:

I wonder if the 2014 game plan for now is this:

against RHP: C John Jaso 1B Daric Barton 2B Eric Sogard SS Jed Lowrie 3B Josh Donaldson RF Josh Reddick CF Coco Crisp LF Yoenis Cespedes DH Brandon Moss

against LHP: C Derek Norris 1B Alberto Callaspo 2B Jed Lowrie SS Nick Punto 3B Josh Donaldson RF Josh Reddick CF Craig Gentry LF Yoenis Cespedes DH Coco Crisp

RE: Jaso At Catcher In 2014???

I would love to see Jaso be the LH platoon and Norris the RH but I just don't know if the A's will take the chance having Jaso behind the plate consistently with his concussion issues anymore.

But as a platoon last season it was working so well...

Jaso career vs RHs-.272/.375/.417

Norris career vs LHs-.280/.361/.496

...their #s combined would've made them a top 10 offensive C in baseball, defensively it's another issue though.

Call me crazy but I'd love to see Reddick have to actually win his job out of ST. Because after last year, I'm perfectly comfortable with this...

C Norris/Jaso/Vogt 1B Moss/Barton/Callaspo 2B Sogard/Callaspo SS Lowrie 3B Donaldson LF Cespedes CF Crisp RF Moss DH Whoever

I would like to see Jaso get more at bats at DH as well.  We really need his high OBP at the top of the lineup.  Coco, Jaso, Lowrie, Donaldson, Cespedes, Moss looks like a nice lineup.

I read that Jaso cut his mullet, so he's dead to me anyway. Put him at second base, for all I care.

He did. Looks like a totally different guy now. Maybe he'll try JD's cut... whatever the hell that thing is called.

There is a huge difference between Moss and Reddick on defense. And defensive runs saved count as much as offensive runs created.

This is true.  I was shocked to see that Reddicks WAR was 2.5 to Moss' 1.9.  I assume it is due to the platoon taking Moss off the field often combined with the defense.

Maybe he saw Norris' and realized there wasn't room for two mullets on one catching staff.  Norris' is tough to top.

Reddick is real weapon in RF.  Just look at the Tigers series, the A's aren't in Game 1 without his D, and probably don't win Game 3 without him.

We just need to make sure Melvin recognizes that the next time it's top of the 8th down by a run, runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out, one of the most difficult players in baseball to strike out sitting on your bench, and Reddick is up, he needs to be pinch hit for.

RE: Jaso At Catcher In 2014???

Your lineups look OK, but I'm not sure Punto's any better than Barton vs lefties.  They could put Callaspo at 2B and Barton at 1B vs lefties.  Another option would be to sit Crisp or Reddick vs lefties and make Callaspo DH.  Callaspo's, Jaso's and Moss's flexibility means they almost never have to put someone terrible in the lineup even with an injury or two.

It sounds like Jaso is going to catch some and DH some.

Moss actually saw more PA and games than Reddick last year. Fangraphs had Moss' defense costing him ~2 WAR.

But Jaso's did. It had a WAR of 2.1 all by itself.

The age-old divide. New schoolers value the mullets, baseball traditionalists value the pornstaches.

Good...he looked like a bummy hippy IMO.

Now hopefully he can not be the worst defensive catcher ever...

I think Jaso will be getting a lot of ABs at DH.  Anyway, that seems to be Melvin's plan, which makes sense to me.  I believe he (Melvin) has already alluded to this.

Considering how iffy Reddick is, I'm surprised we traded Smith
