Amazing given that he signed with the A's specifically because he didn't want to commit for more than 4 years.  I'm all for it.

Now he's saying he wants to spend his career here. noidea   Personally, I thought he'd move into New York pinstripes, next.  Guess the ball is now in ownership's court.

Re: Shocker? Cespedes wants extension!

This makes the Crisp extension even more of a headscratcher. I would have definitely tried to lock Cespedes up before Crisp (unless the A's have a greater willingness to spend than I thought). I figured that the Gentry and Burns acquisitions were more or less hedges to let an aging Crisp go after this season. Or this might be a new strategy to sign aging/productive players to reasonable deals and trade them to get something since draft pick compensation is basically not an option for a player like Crisp.

Yea well, Tejada wanted to finish his career in Oakland too. Let's hope management doesn't whiff twice.

And remember Giambi's emotional "I want to spend my entire career with this organization"?

This seems like a reasonable comp if both sides are serious about it.  I would guess it would come next offseason at the earliest (if at all), however.

Re: Shocker? Cespedes wants extension!

Oakland generally seems to have fun-looking clubhouse atmosphere (I'm not sure what the recurring factor is, since the players and coaches keep changing) so I think if the franchise could afford big money salaries, they'd have little trouble keeping players or even luring top free agents, sewer water in the dugout or no sewer water in the dugout.

Re: Shocker? Cespedes wants extension!

I'm sure he'd be happy to sign an extension today if the A's cut him a $100M+ check. I guess that's better than him wanting to get out of town at all costs, but I can't ever remember an A's player feeling that way when the team was winning.

Yeah, I think the A's should be a little leery of a major extension right now, with Cespedes having had one good year and one bad year (and the bad year being the most recent one). It would be a huge risk, considering I doubt Cespedes would sign for less based on that bad year. He'd probably want to be paid like a top player even though he's in no way sure to perform like one.

After another good year, if he has one, it would be a more interesting proposition, IMO.

Sign NOW please Billy! His value will only rise between now and contract year most likely.

This guy was a franchise changer for us...forget WAR...must keep.

RE: Shocker? Cespedes wants extension!

Cespedes has been a difficult player to quantify, the first year he was severely underrated defensively and last year he regressed significantly with his ability to get on base. I still think he's a superstar, if there is any ability to keep him around through his prime the A's should jump all over it. Hoping that the warts are enough to get him in to the A's budget after losing next Callaspo, Lowrie, Gregerson, and Johnson after the season.

If he was extended, it would be interesting to see how they piece together a staff. Parker, Moss, and Donaldson all will be arb eligible and due for big raises, Kazmir and Jaso are FAs, and there aren't a lot of reinforcements close to the majors outside of Russell. Given the lack of reinforcements, it will be interesting to see how quickly the guys from the past two drafts can move, specifically the Covey, Wahl, Sanburn, Finnegan group. If the A's hit on one of them, it may open them up for a Parker or Straily trade to fill other holes.

Yes. He is going to get more expensive with a good year.

Re: Shocker? Cespedes wants extension!

The reason Cespedes (or his agent) wanted a four year deal was to get to FA sooner than later, giving him the opportunity for greater career earnings. If he was against the idea of playing in Oakland, he never would have signed in the first place.

In the end, it will come down to money. He's not saying that he will take a discount to stay with the A's.

The A's willingness to sign Crisp is probably an indication that they don't think they will sign Cespedes to an extension.

Re: Shocker? Cespedes wants extension!

crisp was their guy because he's semi affordable and wanted to stay here. like beane did with mark ellis for awhile. yes, it would be nice to have cespedes locked up for another 3-5 yrs and making that transition with russell much easier.

BTW, we havent heard much recent interest in several int'l free agents still available. Such as pitcher raicel iglesias or suk min yoon. aledmys diaz is able to sign feb 19th, i think he could be that instant upgrade for 2b in 2015 if not sooner

RE: Shocker? Cespedes wants extension!

I'd be willing to bet it's more likely the A's trade Cespedes before his contract runs out then it is for him to sign a long term extension.

Not sure the A's in their current financial state would be willing to spend potentially 1/4 or 1/5 of their payroll on one player for the foreseeable future.

I tend to agree with you.

A's current financial state is solid. Yearly profits and and an over 230% increase in franchise value. Not NYY or anything close, but solid.

Ownership is just cheap.

Me too, but mainly because of the putrid pool of goo that was Bob Crosby.
