Trade for Billy Butler

Posted: 10/26/2013 8:04 PM

Trade for Billy Butler

Would love to trade for Billy Butler. Hits Verlander .441 lifetime and has hit safely against him 21 out of 24 games he's started. Doubles/gap hitter.

I'd give up: Reddick, Moss, Choice for Butler straight up, maybe a PTBNL from KC too.

Butler's contract is reasonable. $8M in 2014 and a $12.5M team option in 15 with a $1M buyout.

I'd do everything I could to try to land Butler and Ellsbury this offseason.

No thanks. May as well get Chris Carter back. At least his contract provides value.

Who doesn't like Ellsbury, but come on, the contract he'll command from some one will be absurd.

What's your argument in thinking that Billy Butler wouldn't be a valuable addition?

RE: Trade for Billy Butler

He would be a positive addition to our deficient lineup, but giving up players AND paying him his contract is wasted valuable dollars. I'd rather sign two quality relievers for $8 mil, or a starter, or 2-3 position players for depth.

I think that landing Ellsbury is a pipe dream, and your trade for Butler would leave a big hole in RF.

I wouldn't trade Moss alone

Re: Trade for Billy Butler

Butler's deal is reasonable, but there's probably not much surplus value there. Certainly not enough to be worth trading much to acquire him and his contract.

If we were talking about an elite player, that would be a different matter since elite players these days rarely (but obviously not never, Robinson Cano will this off-season) hit the free agent market; more and more teams are locking up their best players to extensions before they reach the free agent market. But Butler is not an elite player and players of his level (roughly average overall...good bat, but zero contributions other than his hitting) reach free agency every year.

My guess is Ellsbury gets 6 years $130 million

Bring Butler to Oakland, Billy!

I'd like to add Butler to the fold if we could get him at a bargain, but I wouldn't give up that much for him.

Reddick for Butler, straight up. Maybe add a lower level prospect or two if need be, but I wouldn't go much further than say a Bostick or Alcantara.

Explain this to me.  Moss put up much better offensive numbers than Butler, is cheaper and can play two def positions.  Butler would be a nice acquisition, but not even straight up for Moss, let alone with Choice and Reddick to boot.

Nothing to explain.  3 cheap assets for 1 highly paid DH.  No reason to ever make such a deal.  If the A's felt secure with Parker being healthy next year, I could understand a Milone/Griffin+ Choice type deal for Butler/RP, but nothing more.

Re: Trade for Billy Butler

Resigning Bartolo would need to go down before any trade happens. I could also see a Milone and maybe a Weeks happen due to the fact that the Royals need a 2nd baseman and SP, he would be a fan favorite the minute he steps into green and gold. He's the type of player the A's need for a spark, The big boy can hit!

Re: Trade for Billy Butler

I'd rather spend the money on a starter to replace Bartolo and maybe Parker if he's hurt.  I'd rather see Choice/Smith at DH than Jesse Chavez in the rotation.

This.  And why should we trade Moss or any of our outfielders?  I think Moss, last season proved his power #s in '12 were no fluke. He's no Barton defensively, but I've been impressed at how far along he's come with his D over there.  I don't see why he couldn't and won't become an above average fielding first baseman.    And, once again, I really think it would be wise for people to wait and see Reddick's offensive numbers once his wrist is healthy.  Both he and Coco Crisp also give us two of the best defensive outfielders in the game. We still have 2 seasons of Cespedes ... barring Billy making an early deal as the end of his contract is in sight.  And I would be surprised if Choice is not above average once he makes the grade.

As a Royals fan I would not like this trade either.  Moss hit .256, ton of strikeouts, OBP of .337, 30HR's (that is great) and 87RBI's.   Butler hit .289, OBP of .374(this is very good), 15 HR's (not good), and 82 RBI's   While Moss would be a good addition he is not a good defensive player.  And the Royals have an excellent 1B.   Choice has potential but has not lived up to his potential and it is rare that all of a sudden he blossoms in the majors.  Reddick would be interesting.  A wrist injury can completely heal or can be a cancer for life.  That said, as a Royals fan I would be interested in Reddick but not for Butler. One of our bullpen pieces not named Holland would be my offer.

My goodness, that trade would decimate the A's lineup
