BA Disses A's Again!

BA Disses A's Again!

Callis picks us 4th in division. Mike (Raleigh NC): Hi Jim, Did I see you predicting the A's finishing 4th in 2013? How about a little respect for a team that won the 94 games last year. Why so pessimistic on the A's 2013 chances. Thanks.
Jim Callis: It's not disrespect. I think the Rangers and Angels are both better than the Athletics, and I think Oakland played over its head last year. Third place would have been a safer pick, though I have faith that the Mariners will improve. I like a lot of Seattle's young talent.

What a joke. Sadly it's unsurprising.

I don't think that's unreasonable at all. I think the SS/2b/3b are all huge ?s and that's pessimism reason. i'm wringing my hands too.

Good. Let's hope the Rangers and Angels are underestimating the A's the same way.

So what? Bet he had us predicted to finish 4th last year, too.

Besides, we were only in first place for one day last season, the only day that mattered.

Rangers and Angels are better; but so were they last year.  Top talent and lots of $ simply does not always = a winner.  The only ? I have with re to his prediction, is he thinks the Mariners are better too.  Of course, unless he's thinking the Astros will finish 3rd. eek1

Yeah, it's reasonable to put the Rangers and Angels at the top of the division. But, the M's better than the A's is a stretch, though he did say that picking the A's 3rd was the safer bet.

I see questions with the A's too. Many actually. But I also see major problems for the Rangers and Angels. Pujols now has plantar fascitis again. He is already on decline as well. His K rate and BB rate have been heading in wrong direction the last 4 years. Hamilton is what he is. A risk. They have no OF depth. Vargas looks terrible this spring and Hanson already has had an arm issue. Blanton is terrible. Rangers need N Cruz and Kinsler to be monsters again. They weren't last year. Their SP does not impress me in any way. This division is very winnable.

You can pick the A's 3rd and still think the division is winnable. I don't think there's a huge separation between the Rangers, Angels, and A's but, I would put the A's 3rd among that group.

Unless they have a total collapse this year, the A's have the best pen, and I like their rotation better, as well.  Especially if Anderson can (finally) have an injury-free season and our rookie starters don't have a sophomore jinx.

A's being 3rd best in the division can be argued, but saying they finish 4th is ridiculous yet not surprising coming from BA

Well, then I guess there's only one thing left to do...

I actually, seriously don't think they are.  For real.

In fact, every time I hear the talking heads gab about how the Angels are improved over last year I question how and where.  Hunter for Hamilton is a wash.  Plus they lose Greinke.  I just don't see it.

Re: BA Disses A's Again!

We've got the best pitching staff in the division by a good margin if they can stay healthy. And we've got a nice mixture of power, speed, and OBP in the lineup. The team is young and the majority of our key contributors last season should improve.

1b and maybe DH are the only positions that improvement seems unlikely. Remember that last season we struggled to get any offensive production out of C, 2b, SS for most of the season.

Oh yeah, and we've got one of the best managers in MLB, so that helps.

I do fear the Angels a bit, their lineup is just insane. But the A's were a better team last season, and I don't expect them to just fall apart. But games aren't won and lost on paper, anything is possible.

Good, maybe this will cancel out the Buster Olney jinx.

The A's haven't converted as front-runners since 2003; better that they see themselves as underdogs.

Jim Callis is a really bright guy. Do I disagree with him on the prediction? Yes, I do, but I can see the thought process behind his prediction. He's counting on a lot of Seattle's prospects to make an immediate impact but if they do the Mariners are a scary team.

Re: BA Disses A's Again!

In a related note, Baseball Prospectus picks the A's for third.  Last year they gave them a 0% chance at winning the division.  0%!  I'm sure they will argue that they rounded down.  However, I notice that they are not using percentages this year.

I think Callis is from the Seattle area. Homer bias.
