Report: Gio, Colon, Melky & others got PEDs from Miami doc

From the Miami New Times:

A Miami Clinic Supplies Drugs to Sports Biggest Names

...Then check out the main column, where their real names flash like an all-star roster of professional athletes with Miami ties: San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera, Oakland A's hurler Bartolo Colón, pro tennis player Wayne Odesnik, budding Cuban superstar boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Texas Rangers slugger Nelson Cruz. There's even the New York Yankees' $275 million man himself, Alex Rodriguez, who has sworn he stopped juicing a decade ago....

...There's also the curious case of Gio Gonzalez, the 27-year-old, Hialeah-native, left-handed hurler who won 21 games last year for the Washington Nationals. Gonzalez's name appears five times in Bosch's notebooks, including a specific note in the 2012 book reading, "Order 1.c.1 with Zinc/MIC/... and Aminorip. For Gio and charge $1,000." (Aminorip is a muscle-building protein.)

Gonzalez's father, Max, also appears on Bosch's client lists and is often listed in conjunction with the pitcher. But reached by phone, the Hialeah resident insists his son has had no contact with Bosch.

Wow. Does this change any perception that the Gio trade was a bad one for us or what?

Well that makes the Gio trade look a bit better.

This is a heavy duty article. I would hope Gio is innocent and can somehow vindicate himself.

Did Gio actually take anything illegal? All the other players mentioned were specifically cited as taking steroid or HGH substances. Curious though that the description of what he received was shortened, I wonder if the article author has connections to Gio or his Dad?

So sick of A's players being linked to steroids...

There's a bunch of other "lesser" players like Yasmani Grandal associated with this clinic, too. The ESPN report just lists the "big" names.

There's a certain amount of guilt by association. Sorry for sounding so cynical but, the probability that a pro athlete was using this clinic for legitimate supplements is low.

Nelson Cruz also on the list.  Could be why he was a late bloomer?   Rangers were made aware like a month ago and immediately reported it to MLB.  As for Gio ....?  his father claims Gio is clean.  The father is there regularly for weight issues.  I sincerely hope Gio is innocent; if not the trade is looking better and better.

Since Colon is on there mulltiple times, I'm wondering if there are going to be more repercussions involving him?  Also, would think it very likely Arod's days in NY are numbered, as per the espn article.  I just shake my head, especially now that MLB is testing, why these guys continue to use these PEDs.  And in the meantime, I'm hoping like heck that no A's are found on the list.  Other than Colon, that is.

This is a perfect example of my mantra that we don't know all that needs to go into evaluating a trade. Quite possible that A's brass had suspicions about Gio for some time. Then again, the A's don't seem to care too much as evidenced by bringing Colon back even after being busted.

I am at the point where I believe that almost every player is taking something to get and edge or retain their edge. There is so much money involved. I also don't think tis is all about baseball. Seems to me every pro sport is full of this. There will always be a scientist who is one step ahead of the testing.

For what very little it's worth, Gio's average FB velocity (from FG):

2008: 89.7
2009: 91.6
2010: 92.2
2011: 92.8
2012: 93.3

RE: Report: Gio, Colon, Melky & others got PEDs from

Not sure what MLB's policy with regards to this. You get a suspension for failing a drug test but, what happens when you're caught through other means? Also, you run the risk of suspending someone twice for the same offense. Colon failed a drug test and then later you catch him buying drugs during the same time frame. Of course, it appears he was buying drugs well before the failed test, too.

It appears that A-Rod had been buying PEDs from this clinic from 2009 to the present. So, is this one offense? Or multiple offenses?

who really cares?

drug testing is in place, i'm sure Gio took a drug test in the past 5 years. nothing came up.

as far as trading him goes, any GM who trades a guy who is really good over steroid suspicion , or risking a suspension is stupid. a potential 50 game suspension for an average haul full of minor leaguer?Fire-able offense.

I thought we were over thinking steroids make you a completely different player... but apparently not.

Right, no one should care because drug testing is infallible. No one has ever beaten drug testing, and no one ever will. All hail the drug testing!

Can the Yanks get out of A. Rodriguez's contract because of drug suspensions?  Not sure what would make me happier, NYY stuck with that sunk dough, or Rodriguez losing all that money that was guaranteed?

Odd story. Seems like a balco Miami.

Why do these stories come out regarding baseball but never football or anything else?

I think because baseball, at least recently, has been a lot more aggressive about investigating these sorts of things. The fact that MLB was already engaged in an investigation of this clinic before this story was printed is a testament to the fact that they are actively involved in trying to root out these sorts of distributors. Football, I don't believe, doesn't have the same interest in finding this out. Their testing is way less effective than baseball's. I think they don't want to see the real results if they were to ramp up their testing.

The Ray Lewis deer antler issue is an example of the NFL not really being ahead of any of these sorts of stories. But it funny that we don't blink an eye when guys like Lewis and Justin Smith are given so many pain killers they can't even feel their tricep so that they can play, but we go crazy when we see a story about a banned substance that is meant to encourage healing rather than simply masking pain.

Re: Report: Gio, Colon, Melky & others got PEDs from Miami

Here's the problem... nobody cares! Obviously the players don't even care. Why should they care? They get a 50 game vacation if they get caught.

1st offense = 1 year no pay/no longer HOF elgible
2nd offense= lifetime ban/ pension is donated to charity
