Ross, Kirby-Jones shipped to Padres

Just posted to MLB Trade Rumors site...

The Padres announced that they acquired right-hander Tyson Ross and infielder A.J. Kirby-Jones from the A's for infielder Andy Parrino and left-hander Andrew Werner. None of the four players have enough service time to be arbitration eligible.

At first glance, Werner looks interesting as a soft tossing lefty who gets a lot of groundballs.  He was signed out of the independent league after the 2010 season, breezed through the minors, and held his own in 8 starts in the majors last year.

RE: Ross, Kirby-Jones shipped to Padres

See yah Tyson. Hope he finds success with the Pads, but couldn't take it seeing him get innings for the A's anymore. IMO he's too wild to be effective as a reliever or a starter despite how much "stuff" he has. I don't know if it's the lack of a repeatable delivery or just his breaking pitches move so much it's too hard to control but his fastball is straight and his secondary pitches are rarely strikes. Not a good recipe for success.

Really hoping Perrino is not our new starting SS in '13, though he has hit very well in AAA. Wonder what impact his acquisition has on Sogard/Rosales.

Re: Ross, Kirby-Jones shipped to Padres

SD fan here.......no great players in this deal but maybe some usefulness as role players.

Parrino can't hit at the ML level but can play quality defense in the INF and is the classic all effort player......good for the bench and the team.

Werner soft tossing LHP...given Oakland's staff he looks like he might fill a LHP role in the pen.

On the surface, Padres get a throw-away A ball player Kirby-Jones and Tyson Ross who is the brother of Joe Ross who the Padres took in the first round a couple of years ago.  Has not performed all that well in the ML but did well (at age 25) in AAA last year.  Two questions:

1. Does he still have any real ML potential?
2. Does he have any minor league options left?

Re: Ross, Kirby-Jones shipped to Padres

id say its highly unlikely they sign drew. i'm all in for nakajima though.imo he's their best option other than trades. offer him maicer izturiz money, similar deal

parrino looks like a better fit at utility than sogard or rosales. i still have hopes sogard can be useful though

#Athletics assistant GM David Forst says that Andy Parrino “is definitely in the mix” when it comes to the A’s starting shortstop spot.

Ross is out of options, right? It's not a bad trade considering Parrino and Werner both still have options.

Parrino is interesting. He hit very well and consistently in the past two seasons at AAA, but dropped off far more than you'd expect in the majors. The Bill James metric has him at .265/.345/.392 for 2013 and it will be his age 27 season.

It's the Billy back up plan starting to take shape....nothing more or less..Tyson was done being an A anyway.

Re: Ross, Kirby-Jones shipped to Padres

i remember billy owns hyping up tyson ross for years. athletic, off the charts makeup, 98 mph fastball, wipe out slider blah2blah2blah2

he had no shot of making A's rotation. if padres can completely overhaul his  delivery he might turn into a decent reliever. but when jim miller, neshek, scribner is ahead of you thats not a good thing. plus they have simmons, leon, figueroa who could get shots at some point. also carignan probably returns late next season

I like this deal. Its low risk and has a bit of upside for us.

Glad Ross is no longer an A.

So what the hell are we supposed to do now if nine of our starting pitchers get hurt in spring training?

I wouldn't use Bill James translations, they're overly optimistic for minor leaguers. Putting up an .870 OPS in Tuscon isn't that good. PECOTA had Parrino at .217/.309/.325 for 2012. I'm guessing the A's like his defense more than Rosales and Sogard.

Werner had 8 starts last season for the padres. The first 4 were very strong, the last 4 were terrible.

Likely purely speculative trade, with both sides digging for treasure.

A's give up a pitcher with a -1.2 WAR + a minor leaguer for 2 players with a combined -0.5 WAR.

Re: Ross, Kirby-Jones shipped to Padres

Funny how the Pads have Andy Parrino listed as a 2nd baseman and 3rd base, but I have also seen him listed at 1b occasionally as well, yet the A's are saying he'll definately get a shot at the starting SS position in Spring Training... I wonder if the Pads decided that he's more of a UTILITY player... I hope not. We already have one in our minor league system under "Full Utilty" development, by the name of Grant Green. HMMMM??

Re: Ross, Kirby-Jones shipped to Padres

most of his games in minors have been at SS but has also played everywhere else
http://www.baseball-reference....id=parrin001and

seems to me sogard/rosales spots are in question. especially rosales who's a possible non tender. nakajima is my most realistic signing if they are bring in another infielder, with parrino at utility. that would be the best option if they dont sign drew.

werner looks like depth or in a similar role like blackley.
