Blue Jay / Marlin trade
Johnson/Buehle for Esobar and Hechavarria are the known names right now per Rosenthal. Rumors that Reyes might be involved.

Re: Blue Jay / Marlin trade
I think there are a few unhappy teams in the AL East right about now, unless you're the Blue Jays. They are taking on a lot of payroll, will be interesting to see if and how much the Marlins are going to pick up. Actually, I'm happy to see they dumped Escobar .. and it wasn't on the A's.

RE: Blue Jay / Marlin trade
Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, John Buck, and Emilio Bonifacio to Toronto. A Huge salary dump. The people of Miami sure got played by the Marlins ownership.

Re: Blue Jay / Marlin trade
If you were a FA in your prime, would you ever sign with Miami, knowing a year later you probably will be traded. I know that is always a risk unless you have a no trade contract, but I find them to be a joke with how often this happens and how quickly. You're a FA and choose to play in Miami and get traded to Toronto not long after.

...AND the city of Miami. Worst sports deal for taxpayers since the Raiders' return to Oakland.

Seems like a good time for the Jays to try something like this. More power to 'em.

RE: Blue Jay / Marlin trade
Have a number of friends on the Jays board who have been saying for years that the Jays GM (first JP Ricardi, now Alex Anthopolous) had no authority to make big trades because Rogers Communications (owners of the Jays) wasn't interested in spending money.
They took on about 45 million in contracts for next year, and gave up very little going the other way, and they still retain most of their top prospects and young MLB players. Gutsy move by the Jays.

Re: Blue Jay / Marlin trade
So Marlins give out a ton of big contracts, pay one year's worth (probably the cheapest year since most are backloaded) then dump them for some legit prospects. Nicolino and Marisnick were thought of as centerpieces for a possible Gio trade last year. Seems pretty genius by the Marlins assuming they can replace some of the guys they dealt through free agency. As much as you'd like to think no free agents would sign with Miami after this, most players will still just sign for the top contract offer.

Re: Blue Jay / Marlin trade
A lot of middle infielders flew around in this deal, I wish the A's were able to join in on the fun...to be honest, I would actually prefer Yunel Escobar over Stephen Drew (in a vacuum assuming we aren't trading A-listers) . I think he is the better defender, not coming off major/chronic injuries, much cheaper and he makes contact while having a steadier offensive output year to year. As long as he isn't a rageaholic (even Milton worked here for a couple yrs) I think he would have very few issues in this clubhouse which has always been one of the most relaxed in MLB.

Re: Blue Jay / Marlin trade
I think the A's can still get Escobar if they want him. He makes FIVE MILLION DOLLARS per annum. Weeks for Escobar might be a reasonable starting point.

Of course, the downside of this strategy is if the free agent has a down year, and you have to pay $8 million to dump them for a fringe-prospect (Heath Bell).
