Re: Patterson leaves for the Yankees
The A's pitching program (which Patterson helped build in the late 90s and Romanick perfected before Patterson came back in 2008) is so strong that I don't anticipate a big drop-off in pitcher development. Scott Emerson has been doing a terrific job for a long time.
I do fear that the Yankees will now get more out of their young pitching talent, which should be a concern for the whole league, however. They have been doing okay developing young players the past 10 years like Cano, Cabrera, Gardner, etc. But they haven't had the same luck with their pitchers with the failures of guys like Hughes, Joba, Bettances, etc. to develop as expected. If they can start getting young guys pitching better, the rest of the league will have a much tougher time keeping up.

I thought Patterson was with the Diamondbacks in the late '90s. Does he really do anything uniquely magical that the Yankees don't already know about or is he just a good teacher?

Re: Patterson leaves for the Yankees
He was with the A's in 1996 and helped start the program they currently run, then went to Arizona. He is a very creative thinker, and has helped with both mechanical fixes and new pitches for a lot of pitchers in the A's organization since he has been around.

RE: Patterson leaves for the Yankees
This is really bad news for the A's. From what I've read over the years Gil has been instrumental in the teaching of the cutter... A lot of the diamond in the rough studs have come from Gil's teachings, which is obvious a huge need given the A's budget. Expect the yankes to start having pitchers coming out of nowhere and dominating shortly. Sad day for A's fans.

Sad to see him go and it is a big loss for the A's organization, but on the other hand, Emo,(Scott Emerson), will do an exceptional job in his place. Baseball is about change and we all have to get used to it. Best of luck to Gil.
