great move

he was that quiet leader/mentor to the young pitchers, imo he made more an impact than mccarthy last yr. A's probably did a background check on the ped situation before bringing him back.

anderson
parker
mccarthy
colon
milone/griffin/straily

hmmm, they have pitching to trade if both colon/mccarthy are back.

Why is this a head banging moment? Colon was the best starter the A's had by ERA and is likely coming very cheap. Since he is pitching in winter ball the A's have had a chance to see how he performs post-suspension.

I guess after thinking about it, as long as he stays off the juice, then hopefully it will be alright.  Also someone brings it up to me about bringing him in as a Manny deal.  Can't have too much depth.

The way I think about it is that Colon made $2M last year (minus his suspended games) and was more valuable than McCarthy. I'd guess he signed for less this time, maybe $1M, and McCarthy is going to get at least $5M/yr over multiple years for likely producing the same or less value. Would you rather have Colon and $4M to spend getting Drew back or McCarthy?

Can't have too much depth. Bartolo was great for us in 2012, hopefully he can continue to bring it at that level without getting caught for PED's, in 2013.

IMO can't go wrong getting a veteran pitcher of Bartolo's caliber for less than a few million. Good news here.

I find it very hard to root for cheaters.  I want PEDs out of baseball.  I won't celebrate this signing.

I doubt he can be very effective without the juice,

It's a Sicilian Message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes.

yea my prediction is that he is going to get lit up in April and released in May. no way he throws 90-93 mph consistently without the juice. Hopefully the A's will be saavy enough to realize that in spring training and he doesn't make the club.

The contract they signed him to reportedly has a base salary of $3 Million.  Assuming that is true there is no way he won't make the club

RE: A's Agree with Colon on 1 Year contract...

much more than i thought he'd get, they must feel confident in thinking his performance last yr wasnt totally ped boosted. once he got busted most thought thatd be the last opportunity hed get in the majors.

oh well, they wasted 7 mill on braden who didnt really pitch much last 2 yrs, 3 mill seems like a bargain for colon compared to that

they also must not think straily, griffin are quite ready or lining up depth for a possible trade. lets say griffin, straily, gray, peacock (forgot about ross too) all begin in AAA rotation for 2013 thats pretty good depth to have if needed

Not many people thought the A's would not resign him, but the A's thought otherwise. I'm glad he's back.

Re: A's Agree with Colon on 1 Year contract...

huh? i don't get your statement.

3 million is a bargain for someone you don't know how he is going to perform without PEDs? Someone who is going to reach 40 yrs old soon? Why would his base salary be higher than what it was last year? There is definitely more question marks this year than last year and he made $2 million last year.

spending 7 mill on braden was a waste but it makes it ok to make another bad decision and waste $3 million on Colon. eek1

i don't like this move if it was for $3million

Bart was good last year.

I'm down. I'm not sold on Milone or Griffen so I'm in on Bart.

He's serving his time, he's pitching well in winter ball, and let the A' staff judge his performance in spring training.  I believe in giving people second chances and who knows, he may have used testosterone to treat his injury in the first place.

He was only "solid" because of the PEDs y'all. At best he'll be a back-of-the-rotation innings-eater, which I guess is not a bad deal for $2mil (until a better 5th steps up).

Re: A's Agree with Colon on 1 Year contract...

Just read this on espn.  I am closely shocked, never thought they'd even be tempted to sign him.  Frankly, I'm glad they did.  While the base contract is $3mil, it is incentive laden and he could earn more, if I understood, correctly.  Evidently, the fact Braden chose FAgency, also had something to do with it, I believe.  Got to have a couple vets in that rotation.  If he can perform to last year's standards without the peds, why not give it a shot?  Also hope they can work a deal to get McCarthy back.   Both were welcomed mentors to the rookies, this season.

RE: A's Agree with Colon on 1 Year contract...

Not too surprised they re-signed him and it's a great move.

He proved to be a good clubhouse and veteran presence on the pitching staff. He only throws a fastball with the occasional offspeed pitch with movement, so I don't think that lack PED's will effect his performance on that front too much.

Also it's good that it's an incentive-laden deal.
