Ya, I'm not sure how you could spin this a bad way... Fuld was hitting pretty well, but IMO, is a career 4th outfielder. Milone was a key part to the A's success the last few years, and then got demoted when Samardzija came over. He still was 6-0 and had a 2.62 ERA since the beginning of May.

Color me impressed on move #1.

You can certainly file that one in the, "I certainly didn't see that one coming" category.

Fuld has performed well for the Twins, but trading a guy who, let's face it, is really nothing more than a quality 4th outfielder for a lefthanded starter with some upside and will be under team control through 2018 is a surprisingly decent return.

Re: Twins get Tom Milone for Sam Fuld

Milone HAS to pitch in a pitchers park... like Oakland... so the number of teams interested in him are pretty few... San Diego, Minnesota maybe Seattle...

But he's been a fine #4 starter and if he brings an era around 4.00 then you are happy

It's a phenomenal return for Fuld. When I saw it I thought it was a joke. Hell they got more for Fuld than they did for Morales.

yep---good move. So now CF is a dead zone in Minnesota. Will be interesting to see how they deal with that before day is done.

You don't like Santana out there? Or you just think he needs to be back to shortstop for the future?

Well, he may be the Twins main option. I figured him to be an infielder...but since they have auditioned him out there....maybe he'll do.noidea

SOmeone on the A's board had Fuld's WAR this year as really high....

Fuld has had a solid year but make no mistake;  he has always been and probably always will be, a 4th outfielder. He just happens to be swinging a hot bat right now.   What Ryan did was trade an asset when his value was at its highest.  I see this deal as a win-win for both teams.  The A's get a player who will give them immediate help for their postseason run and the Twins get a pitcher who could be a decent back of the rotation starter for them this year and the next.  At the very least, he will probably be a less expensive improvement over Correia.

Wow did someone drop Billy Beane on his head. He's had to have made 2 of the dumbest trades in recent memory today. Milone for Fuld? Ok thanks for the hand out. Milone is miles ahead of Fuld as far as talent.

And trading Cespedes to the Red Sox for Lester and Gomes whom both will be free agents in the offseason and will most likely go back to Boston....wtf is he thinking? You can't tell me Oakland got the better end of that deal. Not when you trade the 2 time home run champ, and a guy who's isn't even in his prime yet.

I wouldn't bank on Lester going back to Boston. The Red Sox have adopted a small market philosophy and are reportedly trying to get their payroll down to $80 million next year.  After getting burned by the Gonzalez and Crawford deals, they have publicly stated that they are now shying away from those mega-contracts, especially when it comes to pitchers.  I can definitely see them bringing back Gomes, however.

I agree that Beane has made some peculiar moves... and I ranked his off-season acquisition of Johnson as one of the dopiest moves around (followed closely by our not only bringing back, but giving a raise to Mike Pelfrey eek1).

And we get Tommy Milone for basically nothing, as Oakland DFA'ed Sam Fuld back in April.  Wow...  I'm scratching my head over this one, as the only other person who changes their mind THAT much that I'm aware, is my wife.

But, let's not get carried away with Tommy Milone.  He may be a slightly better version of Andrew Albers and  he certainly will not set the world on fire.  IF and when he cracks our starting rotation, you'll notice his fastball tops out in the mid-80's, which should tell you something about his ceiling.

But, but, but... I've seen the guy pitch and he can be good when hitting his spots.  We'll see...

Sounds like a guy who just went to Korea and isnt doing too hot...
Meyer and May will be top of the rotation starters by 2015.

Re: Twins get Tom Milone for Sam Fuld

"Isn't doing too hot" is relative.  He's making $800,000 (which is roughly 300K more than Milone), so he's done ok for himself financially.

Performance wise, Albers is certainly not making us regret getting 500K to allow him to go play in Korea.  He's playing for a very bad team, but it also looks like he's not helping them.  Albers is 4-8 with an ERA over 6, so yeah, doesn't look like he's earning that contract.  I wonder if he's had gastro or something or cannot get used to the strike zone or perhaps the mound isn't as high...

I'm glad you tempered your comment about being slightly better than Albers.  Milone is a proven major league lefty.  I agree that he doesn't have blazing stuff but he's learned to pitch up here and with significant success.  His ERA over the past 2-3 years (3.74,4.14, 3.55) walks per nine (1.71, 2.25, 2.43) and K's per nine (6.49, 7.25, 5.70).  Just for comparison, Hughes is having pretty much our best year.  ERA - 4.12, BB/9 - 0.85, K/9 7.71.  Our number 2 is probably Gibson.  ERA - 3.94, BB/9 - 2.53, K/9 - 4.81.

Milone will solidify our rotation for years to come.  And he was virtually free.

Re: Twins get Tom Milone for Sam Fuld

Milone was technically assigned to Rochester---since he can't pitch till Sunday. No point in taking up a roster spot until they need him. He won't pitch in Rochester. Twins then can still look at Darnell and Pino and decide which if any they want to keep around. Milone I'm betting will start on Sunday.

Now we are hearing tonite that Milone may start the Tuesday game for the Red Wings against Louisville. But its not carved in stone. Also Mauer will rehab in Single A. Who knows? Maybe he will, maybe he won't. Will he come to Rochester? Now I'm guessing no. Will he play at all? I'm guessing its 50-50.

Re: Twins get Tom Milone for Sam Fuld

It appears that the Twins have kept recently-acquired starter Tommy Milone in Triple-A to keep him from reaching a third year of service, explains Phil Mackey of 1500 ESPN. With 2.018 on his service clock entering the year, and having been on optional assignment since July 5, Milone is now set up to fall short of the three years needed to qualify for arbitration via the standard route. Though a quick call-up would likely put Milone in line for an extra arb trip as a Super Two, he will nevertheless be subject to team control for four more years.
