Tanaka vs Hughes.  Let's hope that Phil Hughes is extra motivated to beat his former team tonight and let's hope the weather in the Midwest is a bit more pleasant than it is here on the east coast (Hurricane Arthur is kicking up some nasty rain, wind and thunderstorms tonight with more hitting the coastal states tomorrow).

I'll say we have absolutely no chance to beat Tanaka and the Yankees wink.

Well enough to double off of the immortal Tanaka to make it 1-0 Twins wink

It sure did.

Was thinking how Hughes was getting away with throwing some first pitch meatballs taken for strikes the first time around for the Yanks and then they started swinging.

That 3-run bomb really hurt... and that pitch was as meaty a pitch as you'll ever see in the bigs and Beltran, did what he was supposed to do.  crazy

It will no doubt be difficult to come back against a guy who is next to immortal.  In fact, it may be darn near next to impossible tongue.

The long ball has always killed Hughes, as it did tonight.  The game is still within reach, even if it is against the next coming of Cy Young tongue

I always think its funny when Bremer uses his surprised voice when the twins get a hit, like he just did with Escobar.

Eh, guess we can all agree that Tanaka is the front-runner for the Cy Young Award.  It sure would have been nice to beat him on a night he clearly is not at his best.

If the season ended on July 3rd?  Sure!  wink

They played well enough to win this game.  Unfortunately,  Hughes just wasn't at his best and they now have to try finishing up this one against NY's bullpen (which, BTW,  who wouldn't want that guy Betances in their bullpen?  Every time I've seen him pitch this year he has been nasty).

I just think it's his sorry way of artificially trying to build suspense in the game.

Yes, Tanaka at the top, but King Felix right behind.  Interesting to note Glen Perkins' presence at # 10 - this IS something of a surprise.

But yeah, season doesn't end on July 3rd, but we'll see.  It's a fair bit out and highly speculative, but we can only go from what we've seen at the halfway mark.

Speaking of halfway marks, I guess folks guess that we're destined for another last place finish at this point in time.  Surely, we'd be odds-on favorites in this category as well, but we'd better play out that schedule "just in case".

12-3 on a .500 ball-club... the Yanks might be cellar-dwellers without him.

Good to hear Bremer actually call out the hitters for taking strike three in the 9th. First two got very borderline calls but have to protect. I think the success the twins had early in the season taking walks has them too passive. Fans graphs data shows league quickly adjusted by throwing more strikes.

So in today's game Parmalee takes strike three on another borderline pitch. Just amazing how guys hitting in the middle of the order don't want to swing the bat in big situations.

While it's a popularly spouted cliche, this is absolutely not true at all.

Offense is only half battle and while I'd agree putting up 4 runs (against one of the the best pitchers going around) gives your team a chance to win, you still have to pitch and play defense.

The better team won both today and yesterday.  Generally, if your starting pitching is better than the other team's, you're going to win.
I HATE THE YANKEES.

The End

PS  Happy 4rth of July!

Beginning of the end for the Twins. They look like the miserable team they have been the last 3 years again. Thought this year would be different, but over the past 2 weeks the team has been dead. They just cannot sustain anything good.
Well Colabello homered. But overall, the team is stinking out the joint. Yankees have been awful lately and we're letting them back in.

Well, as VT has pointed out correctly, the season doesn't end on July 3rd (or4th), so we got roughly half our schedule to play.

While Tanaka is the early favorite to take out the CY Award and the Tigers to take out the Central, we may see some fading as the season progresses.

But yeah, we could certainly project ourselves to finish < .500 and near or at the cellar, based on what we've seen the first half.  However, like yourself, I'm hoping we go on a bit of a run and get some respectability.

We'll see.
